By Mark DaCosta- In the midst of escalating concern over the rising cost of living in our nation, Irfaan Ali, the presidential candidate from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), revealed his vision for combating poverty during a recent Facebook presentation. While the PPP has consistently touted its economic achievements, the stark reality is that half of our population still lives in poverty, despite Guyana’s status as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, primarily due to significant oil revenues.
Such contradictions raise serious questions about the credibility of any new initiatives put forth by the PPP. This article’s analysis is based on conversations with Guyanese citizens and political and economic professionals, as well as a statement by the People’s National Congress Reform/A Partnership for National Unity (PNCR/APNU)
The APNU Coalition has openly critiqued Ali’s proposed plan, labelling it as a regurgitation of ineffective measures from the past. They assert that his presentation lacks substance, relying heavily on vague slogans and failing to provide a coherent development strategy with clear objectives or timelines.
The pressing issues of corruption and administrative inefficiency, which have reportedly squandered enormous sums from national oil revenues, remain unaddressed in his outline. As highlighted by the APNU, these concerns are particularly alarming given that “worsening living standards, high and rising cost of living, growing income and food poverty, and widespread national despair among citizens” have defined the last five years of PPP governance.
In contrast to Ali’s vague proposals, the APNU is advocating for a more substantive approach that centres on people-oriented development. Their plan aims to eradicate poverty by the end of their initial term in office, promising to ensure that every household in our nation has a livable income and that workers receive a decent wage. They express commitment to a variety of supporting policies, such as cash transfers and substantial subsidies for essential services, including utilities and rent. By putting more income directly into the hands of citizens, they believe it will create a vibrant, demand-driven economy, capable of generating sustainable employment opportunities.
Notably, this vision extends beyond mere poverty alleviation; it includes aspirations for a comprehensive social protection framework that guarantees a high quality of life for every citizen. The APNU envisions an expansive system that promotes equity, effective governance, and enhanced social services. They also plan to fortify institutions such as the Bureau of Statistics to ensure the collection and dissemination of accurate data, providing a solid foundation for policy-making and monitoring progress on various indicators of health and well-being.
The pressing reality of poverty in our country cannot be overstated. Defined as the condition in which individuals lack sufficient income to meet their basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter, poverty persists despite the country’s increased wealth from oil exploration. Independent reports from the Inter-American Development Bank indicate that approximately 50 percent of the population grapples with these challenges, particularly in rural areas where access to resources and economic opportunities remain limited.
As the nation heads toward the electoral date on September 1, discontent with the PPP’s track record continues to grow. Critics argue that, after years of inadequate responses to the escalating hardships faced by ordinary citizens, it is evident that “the PPP has nothing new to offer.” Skepticism about Irfaan Ali’s proposed solutions lingers, as past promises have failed to translate into tangible improvements for the majority of Guyanese. The call for a fresh direction, grounded in actionable plans and realistic outcomes, resonates strongly among those yearning for a more prosperous and equitable nation.
As citizens contemplate their choices in the upcoming elections, it is vital to scrutinise the authenticity of proposed plans against the backdrop of historical performances. Moving forward, the emphasis must be on effective governance, accountability, and practical initiatives that truly prioritise the well-being of all Guyanese, helping to secure a stable and hopeful future for our beloved nation.
