Guyana’s domestic aviation sector has received a significant boost with the arrival of two Italian-manufactured Tecnam P2012 Traveller aircraft, marking another key step in the government’s efforts to modernize and expand the country’s air transport capabilities.

Unveiled on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the twin-engine aircraft are equipped with advanced avionics, air conditioning, WiFi, and short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities—features that make them ideally suited for regional flights, charter services, and operations in remote hinterland areas. Their low maintenance requirements and fuel efficiency also translate into reduced operating costs, making them a cost-effective solution for both public and private operators.

At the launch event, Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, emphasised that the acquisition reflects Government’s commitment to building a world-class aviation sector.

The minister noted that since January 2021, 13 new aircraft have been added to Guyana’s national registry, underscoring the government’s consistent push to upgrade the fleet. He also highlighted ongoing infrastructure developments, including the construction of new airstrips designed to accommodate aircraft like the P2012 and helicopters, as part of a broader plan to improve access across the country.

The Tecnam P2012’s twin-engine safety, robust design, and ability to navigate Guyana’s diverse terrain—including challenging hinterland conditions—are expected to significantly enhance the reliability, comfort, and safety of domestic air travel.

Welcoming the aircraft alongside Minister Edghill were European Union Ambassador to Guyana René Van Nes, Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority Lt. Col. Egbert Field, and Chief Investment Officer of the Guyana Office for Investment Dr. Peter Ramsaroop. The officials described the arrival as a milestone in the evolution of Guyana’s aviation sector.

Minister Edghill further confirmed that additional Tecnam aircraft are expected in the near future, as the government has already given no objection to further acquisitions.

The addition of these modern, multi-purpose aircraft represents a tangible step forward in bridging connectivity gaps, supporting regional development, and ensuring Guyanese passengers have access to safer, more comfortable, and efficient air travel.
