Today, as we proudly celebrate 52 years of CARICOM, we honour the vision, strength, and unity that have guided our Caribbean region through decades of growth, integration, and shared purpose. CARICOM stands as a testament to what we can achieve when we come together in the spirit of cooperation, solidarity, and Caribbean identity.
As we reflect on this significant milestone, 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐌, 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐦, the late President of Guyana. Forbes Burnham, alongside the leaders of Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, boldly signed the 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐬 in 1973, laying the foundation for a regional movement that would give Caribbean nations a stronger collective voice on the global stage.
Forbes Burnham believed deeply in regional unity, not just as a political strategy but as a moral and cultural imperative. His advocacy for Caribbean self-reliance, economic integration, and political collaboration remains relevant today as we face new global challenges and opportunities.
Let us continue to build on this legacy, strengthening the bonds that unite us and deepening the partnerships that uplift our people.
