The Caribbean region comprises countries with diverse historical backgrounds, including former Spanish, French, Dutch, and English territories. The English-speaking Caribbean includes 13 countries that are part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), a regional grouping for economic, diplomatic, social, and cultural representation on the international stage. Each country is sovereign with its own laws, and some have signed international treaties or conventions related to intellectual property.

This guide provides a comprehensive listing of all Caribbean countries and the trademark conventions to which they are signatories. It also outlines the processes for individual country registrations. Trademarks are a crucial tool under International Intellectual Property Law, allowing companies to secure ownership of distinguishing brand marks that uniquely identify their products or services.

The book highlights the varying levels of trademark and intellectual property protections across the Caribbean, influenced by the different legislative activities in each country. It emphasizes the importance of understanding local laws and procedures for trademark registration and notes the international treaties on trademarks to which each territory is a signatory.

Dr. Abiola Inniss, a Guyanese, is an Intellectual Property scholar and leading expert on Caribbean Intellectual Property Law and Policy and holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Law and Policy from Walden University and a Master of Laws degree form DeMontfort University, UK. She is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Caribbean and Americas Intellectual Property Organization, and the founder of the online Caribbean Journal of Law, Policy and Social Change. She is the author of several books and has published extensively in major international journals in the field of International Intellectual Property Law and Policy. She is a keynote speaker who presents regularly at international conferences and has served as a research consultant with the European Union and WIPO. Dr. Inniss has conducted several major studies in Africa and the Caribbean.
