Mr. Carl Greenidge’s name has quickly surged to the forefront of political discourse, hailed as a steady, unifying force and a seasoned statesman with the experience, integrity, and vision to lead Guyana through a period of transformation — especially as the consensus presidential candidate for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) coalition in the upcoming 2025 elections.

Greenidge, born in New Amsterdam on March 3, 1949, is a man whose public service career spans over four decades, stretching across Guyana’s critical economic, political, and diplomatic institutions. A trained economist with a B.A. in Economics from Exeter University and an MPhil in Agricultural Economics from Wye College, University of London, Greenidge has worn many hats—professor, negotiator, minister, and international public servant.

A Statesman Rooted in Service

From his early role as Chief Planning Officer and Secretary to the State Planning Board to his tenure as Minister of Finance (1985–1992), Greenidge was at the heart of economic reform in Guyana. He spearheaded the Economic Recovery Programme (ERP), which restored the country’s international financial standing and ushered in nearly a decade of consistent growth—long before oil revenues flowed.

As Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2015 to 2019, Greenidge represented Guyana with distinction on the global stage. His leadership of the team at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), defending Guyana’s territorial integrity against Venezuela’s claims, remains a testament to his diplomatic acumen and patriotism.

He has also served as President of the ACP-EU Council of Ministers and was a respected voice in international trade and development negotiations for decades. These credentials place him in rarefied company—not just as a capable administrator but as a respected international figure.

A Clean Record, A Clear Vision

Greenidge is widely known for his principled stance on transparency and anti-corruption, values sorely demanded by an electorate increasingly weary of cronyism and political favouritism. His track record of responsible economic stewardship and institutional reform offers hope to Guyanese longing for a clean break from the past and a government that works for all.

His background is not only rich in policymaking but also in thought leadership—he has published extensively on the political economy of development, privatisation, and agricultural reform. His ability to combine academic insight with practical governance makes him uniquely suited to handle the complexities of modern Guyana.

A Bridge Between Generations and Communities

Perhaps what most distinguishes Carl Greenidge is his ability to bridge divides—political, generational, and ethnic. His reputation as a consensus-builder was firmly established when he led negotiations for the 2015 Cummingsburg Accord, forging one of the only successful coalition governments in post-independence Guyana.

Greenidge understands the need to unify Guyana’s diverse population around a shared vision of progress, justice, and inclusion. His dedication to social justice, educational access, and gender equality adds moral weight to his economic and diplomatic credentials.

Why Greenidge, Why Now?

In a time marked by political tension, rising cost of living, and calls for fairer distribution of oil wealth, Carl Greenidge offers experience over experimentation, competence over charisma, and statesmanship over sloganeering. He is not a newcomer, nor is he burdened by political baggage. He is the man many believe can lead Guyana into a new era—one defined not only by GDP growth but by equity, stability, and national healing.

As the APNU+AFC coalition considers its standard-bearer for the 2025 elections, the question facing both the leadership and the people is clear: if not Carl Greenidge, then who? His is a candidacy rooted in knowledge, integrity, and proven leadership—a rare combination that Guyana needs now more than ever.

Carl Greenidge isn’t just a capable candidate; he is the consensus choice for a country ready to turn the page.
