Dr. Randy Persaud’s attempt to shift the narrative will not hold water

Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter titled “Ms. Ferguson is naïveté,” authored by Dr. Randy Persaud and published in Stabroek News on Friday, June 6, 2025. I commend Dr. Persaud for taking the time to respond to my previous letter. However, he should understand that his attempt to shift the narrative will not hold water. My position remains unchanged.

Editor, I am not certain whether Dr. Persaud resided in Guyana both before and after May 2015 to personally experience life under two different administrations. I also question whether he frequents marketplaces or visits communities to engage with ordinary Guyanese and gain firsthand insight into their struggles; struggles that have persisted since August 2020. For many, nothing has changed. Has Dr. Persaud walked through communities in South Georgetown, such as East and West Ruimveldt, to witness the reality of how people are living?

Dr. Persaud must understand that handing out contracts and cash grants is not a long-term solution. These one-off handouts are not uplifting lives in any meaningful or sustainable way. While our national resources are plentiful, they are disproportionately benefitting a select few who continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the broader population.

On the issue of national construction, while Dr. Persaud acknowledges that “the entire nation is under construction,” I ask, has he visited these construction sites to assess the quality of the work? Much of it is substandard, carried out by inexperienced individuals posing as contractors.

A rhetorical question for Dr. Persaud; is he naive to the many egregious acts committed by allies of the PPP/C under the watchful eye of President Irfaan Ali? These include the latest accusations against Mr. Ali regarding alleged facilitation of tax evasion, claims he conveniently “could not recall” when questioned by reporters; the ongoing injustice faced by the parents of Adriana Younge in their search for justice; and the U.S. sanctions imposed on Senior Officer Mr. Sawh of the Guyana Police Force.

Editor, I will close by stating that the defection of individuals from the PNCR and their endorsements of the PPP/C will not erase the egregious acts this government has committed over the past five years. The public deserves to know why these individuals, who once criticized the PPP/C, now stand in support of it. It is also necessary to remind Dr. Persaud that I ensure all information attributed to me is thoroughly researched and factually grounded prior to publication.

Yours truly,
Annette Ferguson, MP
