Dear Editor,
It is a sad day for my country. Politics, at its core, should be about making a meaningful difference in the lives of people through representation. Yet, in recent months and days, I have observed various political figures and parties publicly endorsing Mr. Irfaan Ali for a second term in the upcoming 2025 General and Regional Elections, scheduled for September 1, 2025.
Since August 2020, we have witnessed how the PPP/C administration has treated Guyanese; particularly those who are critical of their governance. In this deepening national crisis, the struggle for justice by the family and friends of Adriana Younge stands as a painful example.
The government’s failure to ensure a thorough investigation and to hold the perpetrators accountable, especially when those individuals appear to be under state protection, is deeply troubling. Yet, despite such glaring injustices, people continue to endorse this administration, presenting a narrative that all is well, that President Ali’s governance has been flawless, and that he is deserving of another term.
Many endorsements hinge on the claim of “development.” While some infrastructural improvements have occurred, much of it remains substandard. What’s conspicuously missing from these endorsements is an honest reflection on how the lives of ordinary Guyanese have changed since August 2020. The escalating cost of living continues to suffocate families. If an evidence-based survey were conducted across all ten administrative regions, even with a modest sample size, it would reveal that for many, very little has changed for the better.
A quick glance across the major sectors reveals increasing levels of corruption. Take, for example, the 12-storey office complex project, for which $8.6 billion was approved since 2022, through the Ministry of Public Works. To date, there is little to no progress visible, no steel frames, no substantive development. In the health sector, while 12 new “state-of-the-art” hospitals were promised, not a single one has been commissioned.
Minister Frank Anthony, during his 2025 budget presentation, promised that the Diamond facility would be opened by April 2025. We are now in June, and the promise remains unfulfilled. Instead of upgrading existing facilities, the government has opted for grand new investments, all while citizens continue to suffer through poor healthcare, frequent drug shortages, and overall declining service.
Let me be clear, endorsements do not equate to electoral victory. What truly matters is whether those offering these endorsements can genuinely influence the voting population, especially when so many Guyanese have lost confidence and trust in them due to their reckless conduct.
As I conclude, Editor, I remind readers that noise in the marketplace does not determine the success of its sales. I therefore urge Guyanese to act with wisdom in the upcoming elections. This is not just another vote, it is a once-in-a-lifetime decision that can save Guyana from the moral decay it currently endures under an administration that continues to drain the treasury without transparency or accountability.
The PPP/C is in a state of desperation, and they will accept endorsements from anyone willing to offer them, no matter how lacking in conviction or principle. But I ask; how can I, in good conscience, endorse a government that has belittled and battered our people?
How can I support a government that refuses to confirm the Chancellor and Chief Justice, and instead has weaponised the judiciary? How can I support an administration that has failed to deliver justice to the families of the Henry Boys, Orin Boston, Sergeant Alex Vaughn, and so many others? How can I support a government that systematically discriminates against and victimises innocent Guyanese? How can I stand behind a regime that has exerted overreaching control over state institutions while robbing the people in broad daylight?
The list of grievances is too long, and so, I will rest my case. But let us not forget these truths.
Guyana must be saved from the PPP/C. Let us unite and work together to bring about the change our nation urgently needs.
