The GEO-ENVIRO SUPPORT SERVICES (GUYANA) INC. Laboratory is newest laboratory to be certified under the GNBS Laboratory Certification Programme. The Laboratory, located at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, received its certificate and plaque from the GNBS on Monday, May 19, 2025, during a special ceremony.

On registering his business in 2016, Taijpaul Dayaram, an investor from the Canadian Diaspora, encountered a major initial challenge. According to Mr. Dayaram, “unfortunately, there was no environment ready to take on Diaspora (investments) in a serious way.” However, in 2020, when the Diaspora was invited to invest in Guyana, the lab was ready to begin its work. He acknowledged the meaningful support provided by GO-Invest and the Diaspora Unit at that time.

Mr. Dayaram attributed two factors for his investment in a laboratory back home in Guyana. According to him, firstly, there was need for quality control based on what was airmarked by the Government for infrastructural development, and secondly, “the love for country and family.”

Today, with a staff complement of thirty-seven, the Geo-Enviro Support Services (Guyana) Inc. offers a wide range of environment and construction related services including drilling and sampling for Geo-technical investigation, footing inspection and classification, surveying, and a full line of construction materials sampling and testing such as concrete and asphalt testing.   The company also boasts the use of modern technologies for quality control, and it is looking to open branches across the country.

In highlighting the nature of his business, Mr. Dayaram said his company can take on any project and his team is made up of the “Go to Guys” who can meet the needs of clients. He added that “the company certificate is highly valued and with the addition of the GNBS Logo, wherever you see our name, you will know that it is a certified quality service.”

When asked what prompted the laboratory to become GNBS certified, Mr. Dayaram stated that the GNBS certification is a highly recognised certification and based on the nature of services provided by his Laboratory, being certified is important. He added that the certification has also been beneficial to the young staff of the Lab, as it provides opportunities for them to be educated in management systems relating to the types of work the Lab does. “The support and training provided by the GNBS was very helpful to my company – the GNBS team held the hands of the staff and took them all the way to certification,” he reckoned.

With World Environment Day to be observed on June 05, the proprietor of the Geo-Enviro Lab said that his company is exploring the development of a programme to recycle waste after testing, for example, recycling after washing asphalt.

Finally, GNBS received the ‘nod of affirmation’ from Mr. Dayaram when asked if he would recommend GNBS certification to other laboratories and businesses. In saying yes, he added, “It is not always about the money and competition – my company cannot handle all the clients in this country but let us all have a level playing field. I would encourage any laboratory in this business to pursue GNBS Certification.

Geo-Enviro Laboratory is the tenth Testing lab to be certified by the GNBS based on the requirements of the National Laboratory Standard – GYS 170:2021 General Requirements for the operation of a laboratory.  The Bureau invites more laboratories to get on the path to certification; a path where the GNBS is capable and ready to offer guidance for labs to achieve quality and business success.
