By Mark DaCosta- Azruddin Mohamed has recently  emerged as a potentially  transformative figure in our nation’s political landscape, galvanising public support amid disillusionment with traditional party politics. According to feedback reaching this publication, his unique blend of philanthropy, grassroots engagement, and a vision for unity resonates with voters seeking substantial change.

In a crucial moment for our homeland’s political narrative, businessman and philanthropist Azruddin Mohamed has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the upcoming General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1, 2025. His announcement on Independence Day may  not only mark a personal commitment to public service but also signals a potential shift away from an entrenched political status quo that many citizens regard as out of touch with their needs.

Mohamed’s assertion that “every inch of this land belongs to us” encapsulates a growing sentiment that the current government has strayed from the values of unity and equality that ought to underpin our nation’s progress. Riding the veritable wave of public discontent with the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Mohamed’s candidacy has sparked conversations on the streets and across social media. Citizens are openly expressing their desire for a new political paradigm, one focused on inclusion and meaningful change.

Notably, even stalwarts from the traditionally dominant PPP and the People’s National Congress (PNC) are shifting their allegiances, hinting at a significant pivot in voter sentiment as they look for alternatives. His campaign promises resonate with aspirations for a better quality of life, particularly in the face of increasing economic challenges and societal disparities.

Azruddin Mohamed’s humanitarian philosophy serves as the backbone of his political approach. He contends that genuine leadership stems from a commitment to uplifting communities rather than seeking personal power. “I stand ready to raise my hand, put my shoulder to the task,” he stated passionately, signalling his intent to dedicate his efforts to raising the living standards of the everyday citizen. His focus on empowerment, particularly in education, healthcare, and sustainable development, positions him as a leader who understands the root causes of societal issues rather than one merely navigating existing political structures.

His declaration coincided with a politically charged atmosphere, as President Irfaan Ali’s decision to call early elections has raised eyebrows and spurred speculation regarding its motivations. Critics argue that this strategic move to shorten the campaign period is an attempt by the PPP to stifle Mohamed’s burgeoning appeal. Yet, rather than quashing his momentum, it seems to have only solidified support for him. Many view this political calculus as an attempt to preserve the PPP’s hold on power amid rising discontent, which in turn illustrates Mohamed’s capacity to position himself as a viable alternative.

As the campaign unfolds, Mohamed’s rhetoric points towards a more united trajectory for our homeland, where tribal voting and ethnic divisions are replaced with a collective commitment to progress. In his Independence Day address, he underscored this vision, stating, “the answer to genuine love for Guyana is in the heart of every citizen.” Such inclusive language aims to bridge gaps that have long divided our society, fostering a sense of fellowship in the face of adversity.

Amid the signs of a shifting political landscape, Mohamed has also called for international scrutiny, viewing electoral integrity as paramount. He expressed optimism regarding global observers, particularly from institutions like CARICOM, ensuring that the electoral process remains transparent. This call for oversight resonates with many citizens who have become sceptical of the motivations of current leadership.

As Mohamed’s candidacy takes shape, many express a hopeful anticipation for the future. His message advocates for awareness of the finite resources atop our soil and seas while underscoring that the true wealth of our nation lies within its people. “The oil beneath our waters is temporary,” he remarked, contrasting it with the renewable potential of our citizenry.

However things turn out, the 2025 elections will certainly be interesting and informative.
