By Mark DaCosta- In an important initiative aimed at fostering financial inclusivity, the Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union Limited (GPSCCU) is partnering with the Caribbean Development Education Program (CaribDE) to host the Intelligent and Inclusive Finance Seminar. This two-day event is set to take place on May 22-23, 2025, at the Impeccable Banquet Hall in Georgetown. With involvement from key stakeholders, the seminar is designed to tackle the challenges posed by an ever-evolving financial landscape while promoting dialogue and collaboration.
The seminar promises a rich programme, featuring insightful discussions led by distinguished speakers from various fields. Highlighting the importance of credit unions in our country’s economic transformation, the session will kick off with a keynote address from Her Excellency Jean Kamau, the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Guyana. Her address will frame the global discourse on cooperative finance within the context of this year’s designation as the International Year of Co-operatives by the United Nations, under the relevant theme, “Building a Better World Together.” This theme resonates deeply with the upcoming International Credit Union Day’s focus on “Co-operation for a Progressive World.”

In this era of rapid economic expansion in our homeland, the seminar’s relevance cannot be overstated. Attendees will explore a variety of essential subjects through workshops and presentations led by experts. His Excellency Conrad Enill, an esteemed figure in the credit union field, will discuss the opportunities and responsibilities that credit unions face as the financial environment transforms. Equally crucial will be discussions on managing the unique risks associated with cooperative and financial systems led by Melvin Edwards, drawing attention to regulatory changes and emerging cyber threats.
Michelle Wallace, an authority on financial management, will take participants through the intricacies of credit union financial statements, while also facilitating a session on the mechanics of interest rates and how they affect members’ financial transactions. Encouraging good governance in credit unions, Dorwin Manzano will delve into effective leadership practices to ensure that cooperative organisations operate with integrity and efficiency.
The programme also aims to demystify the role of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, in enhancing the services provided by credit unions. The exploration of these technological advancements will focus on their potential benefits and risks, underscoring their importance to operational efficiency in this modern age.
In the words of Shona Smart, the seminar coordinator and GPSCCU Human Resources and Administrative Manager, “The more informed our members are, the stronger our institutions become. This seminar is about giving credit union members the knowledge they need to lead, manage, and benefit from cooperative finance.” This reflects a commitment not just to financial literacy but also to empowering members so they can actively contribute to their communities and help drive inclusive economic growth.
The event culminates with a networking session aimed at fostering connections and encouraging ongoing dialogue among participants. This is a vital opportunity for stakeholders across the cooperative landscape to collaborate and share experiences, thereby strengthening the fabric of financial inclusivity in our nation.
The seminar beckons individuals, practitioners, and various stakeholders to partake in this enriching experience. By coming together to discuss these pressing issues, we take crucial steps toward a more inclusive financial system that serves the needs of all citizens. The call for participation is open, and those interested in shaping the future of cooperative finance in our country are encouraged to seize the moment and be part of this essential conversation.
