By Mark DaCosta- A break-in at a Bartica supermarket has resulted in the arrest of several suspects, including a businessman, accentuating concerns about a troubling rise in criminal activities targeting businesses across Guyana.

On the morning of May 19, 2025, the Xin Cheng Supermarket, located at Lot 61 Second Avenue in Bartica, was the scene of a daring theft. The store, operated by 28-year-old Jiamiel Qui, a businesswoman with Chinese heritage residing at Lot 9A Public Road in Port Mourant, Corentyne, was reportedly broken into during the early hours. Initial investigations indicate that three identifiable individuals gained entry by force, made off with various hardware items, and absconded with an unknown sum of cash.

Authorities were alerted shortly after the incident, prompting prompt action from police. Officers swiftly proceeded to the residence of one of the suspects, which led to significant developments in the investigation. During this operation, one individual was apprehended and subjected to questioning, which proved to be the catalyst for uncovering a trove of stolen property.

During the police investigation, law enforcement officials managed to retrieve a substantial haul of stolen goods. Among the recovered items were two distinctive black and yellow cordless drills, accompanied by three batteries, and an Ingco three-piece brush set. Additional tools, including a black Decakila cordless mixer and an electric saw, were also recovered, alongside a belt sander and a portable blender. Notably, authorities also seized cartons of cigarettes.

In the wake of these events, investigators have not only arrested the initial suspect but have also apprehended additional individuals believed to be associated with the crime, including the businessman mentioned earlier. According to police reports, all those taken into custody are actively cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues. The recovered items have been secured at the Bartica Police Station as evidence in the unfolding case.

The audacity of the break-in has raised alarms, reflecting a disturbing trend in our nation where businesses and residents alike are increasingly susceptible to criminal elements. Reports of thefts and break-ins have been on the rise, compelling citizens to question their safety and the efficacy of local law enforcement in addressing these issues. Business owners, particularly in regions like Bartica, are reportedly left wondering what measures can be implemented to safeguard their livelihoods and protect their establishments from becoming the next target.

Community members have expressed their outrage over this incident on social media and elsewhere, emphasising the need for greater police presence and improved security measures within commercial areas. They argue that action must be taken to ensure that businesses can operate without the looming fear of theft. The response from the police, while commendable in this instance, raises questions about longer-term strategies to combat the rising tide of crime.

As the investigation unfolds and more details emerge, it is becoming increasingly clear that the issue of crime must be confronted head-on.
