GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – April 26, 2025 — In the aftermath of national mourning triggered by the tragic death of 11-year-old Arianna Younge, Simona Broomes, presidential candidate and leader of the Alliance for Liberation and Progress (ALP), has issued a call for unity, dialogue, and decisive action.

In a letter to the editor released today, Broomes described the country’s current situation as a “state of emergency,” urging leaders from all political, religious, civil, and social sectors to rise above divisions and chart a unified path forward.

“Our nation finds itself engulfed in grief and unrest,” Broomes wrote. “This grievous loss is a stark reminder of the challenges we face and the pressing need for meaningful change.”

She called on the government, opposition parties, religious leaders, trade unions, NGOs, civil society, and every citizen to come together urgently, warning that failure to act decisively would betray the hopes of future generations. “This is not the time for division, but for collaboration, transparency, and decisive action that protect the human rights and dignity of every citizen, without exception.”

Broomes, a former government minister turned opposition leader, stated that “It is only through sincere dialogue, collaboration, and meaningful action that we can hope to heal and build a better future.”  She urged that the memory of young Arianna Younge should not be allowed to fade without inspiring real reform.

The death of Arianna Younge, still fresh in the nation’s heart, has sparked protests and calls for reforms across Guyana, particularly in areas of policing, child protection, and community justice. Broomes’ letter signals her intention to be at the forefront of these national conversations as a catalyst for change.
