PNCR’s General Council Focused on Building a Just and Inclusive Society

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) held its two-day General Council meeting on March 29th and 30th, 2025, at Congress Place in Sophia. With the theme, “Forming the Next Government: Building a Just, Inclusive, and Prosperous Society for All,” the event brought together a broad cross-section of party leaders, candidates, and members from across Guyana.

The General Council is the party’s second-highest decision-making body, featuring key members of the Central Executive Committee, Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Chairs and Vice Chairs, past party candidates, as well as representatives from the PNCR’s youth and women’s arms. The gathering also included Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and other regional leaders from the National Democratic Councils (NDCs).

A Renewed Commitment to Unity and Progress

The first day of the Council kicked off with an address from the PNCR Leader, Mr. Aubrey C. Norton, MP, who underscored the significance of the event. Norton emphasised that the Council was not merely a routine gathering but a critical moment for reaffirming the party’s unity and purpose.

“Let it be clearly understood: this Council is not a mere formality. Yes, it is a convocation of conscience. It is where we reaffirm our unity, recommit to our purpose, and re-energize our resolve to lead this nation forward, not in pieces or factions, but as one united PNCR,” said Norton.

The PNCR leader also used the occasion to address the current economic challenges facing the country, particularly the stark contrast between Guyana’s rapid economic growth and the persistent poverty affecting many citizens. “We are witnessing the twisted irony of being one of the world’s fastest growing economies, yet one of the slowest to feed its poor,” he stated.

“While the government laughs and says feeding the poor will eat out the budget, we see mega-budgets, but micro-benefits; oil flowing beneath our feet, yet tears flowing from the eyes of hungry children. This, comrades, is not progress.”

His remarks resonated deeply with attendees, setting the tone for the plenary discussions that followed.

Election Readiness and Training

The second day of the General Council focused on preparing the party for future elections. One of the key sessions was led by the PNCR’s Chief Scrutineer, Ms. Carol Smith-Joseph, who conducted an Election Training Session for party members. This session was designed to ensure the party is well-prepared for the electoral process and can successfully carry out its democratic duties in the lead-up to upcoming elections.

Closing Remarks and Charge to the Party

The General Council concluded on Sunday evening with a final charge from Party Leader Mr. Aubrey C. Norton. He reinforced the party’s commitment to working toward a government that prioritises the well-being of all Guyanese, advocating for a more just, inclusive, and prosperous society.

In his closing remarks, Norton called on all members of the PNCR to remain united in their purpose and work tirelessly to secure a brighter future for Guyana.

The two-day General Council marked a pivotal moment for the PNCR as the party continues to chart its course towards forming the next government and addressing the pressing issues facing the nation.
