Akil Johnson, a 27-year-old lawyer from South Georgetown, tragically lost his life early Sunday morning after his motorcycle collided with a car on Sheriff Street.
According to a press release from the police, the accident involved two vehicles: a motorcar, #PWW 9839, owned by Ludonna Naar and driven by 34-year-old Viola Mittelholzer of Lacytown, Georgetown, and a motorcycle, #CP 4679, driven by Johnson.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the car, traveling north along the eastern drive lane of Sheriff Street, was approaching the intersection with Dadanawa Street when it entered the turning lane to turn east onto Dadanawa Street. Meanwhile, Johnson was riding his motorcycle south along Sheriff Street at a high rate of speed, alongside another motorcycle. In the process, Johnson’s motorcycle collided head-on with the car.
At the time of the accident, Johnson was not wearing a helmet. The impact of the collision caused him to be thrown some distance before landing on the road. Despite being rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Accident and Emergency Unit by public-spirited citizens, Johnson was pronounced dead on arrival.
A Notice of Intended Prosecution was served to Mittelholzer, the driver of the car, and police are continuing their investigation into the incident. Eyewitnesses have come forward, and both the car and motorcycle were examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer.
Additionally, a breathalyzer test administered to Mittelholzer revealed two readings of 0.16 and 0.10 micrograms of alcohol in her breath, prompting her arrest. The driver is currently in custody, assisting police with the investigation.
Johnson, a promising young lawyer, was also preparing for his wedding, scheduled for three weeks from now. His sudden and tragic death has left family, friends, and colleagues in shock.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash, and further updates are expected.
