Dear Editor,

Please permit me a space in your newspaper as I am on road most of the time due to my Job, I happened to meet people every day from various backgrounds, however I was told about the revelations surrounding Guyana Oil Company Limited (GUYOIL) have sparked concerns among citizens, stakeholders, and political observers alike.

Allegations are swirling about questionable deals, political interference, and the undermining of corporate governance. It is imperative that President Irfaan Ali immediately ceases any alleged direct interference with Chairman Paul Cheong and allows GUYOIL’s Board of Directors to perform its duties without political manipulation.

It is alleged that a major contract was awarded for the construction of a fuel storage tank under circumstances that lack transparency. The recent wave of politically motivated appointments

(employed) within the company, it is known of the PPP government to run state-owned enterprises like a political machinery rather than a commercially sound, publicly accountable entity.

State-owned enterprises like GUYOIL must function with integrity, accountability, and transparency. These principles are being flagrantly violated if the current allegations hold merit. Chairman Paul Cheong, an experienced public figure, should know better than to allow the integrity of GUYOIL to be compromised. His role is to safeguard the company’s operations from political interference, not to facilitate it.

It is now clear that an independent investigation and a full forensic audit of all transactions at GUYOIL are necessary. The people of Guyana deserve to know the truth. Any wrongdoing must be exposed, and those responsible must be held accountable. Corruption can not and must not be tolerated.

Where is the Chief Executive Officer? why is the CEO silent over these corruption allegations? where are the Board of Directors? why are they silent over these corruption allegations?

GUYOIL belongs to the people of Guyana – not to any political party or leader and for a clear separation between politics and public enterprise. Let the board function, let the Chairman act with integrity, and let GUYOIL be a model of clean and honest governance.

Yours truly,
Pt.Ubraj Narine, JP, COA
Former Staff Sgt.(GDF), Mayor
City of Georgetown
