The Opposition, People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has strongly condemned what it describes as the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regime’s attempts to intimidate and victimise Dr. Terrence Campbell, its member on the Investment Committee of the Natural Resource Fund (NRF). Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has launched a direct attack on Campbell. Jagdeo’s criticism stems from Campbell’s efforts to safeguard the country’s oil revenues and ensure they are properly invested, in opposition to the government’s alleged corrupt practices.
Jagdeo’s attack has sparked outrage from the Opposition, who view it as an attempt to intimidate Campbell and silence his revelations about government corruption. The Opposition asserts that these actions are part of the PPP’s broader goal of controlling and dominating Guyanese society through undemocratic means. In a statement issued Friday, the Opposition expressed full support for Campbell, stressing that his only role is to ensure that the country’s oil resources are invested responsibly and protected from the corrupt practices of the current government.
Campbell’s efforts, the Opposition claims, have placed him at odds with the PPP, who are allegedly attempting to silence him in order to prevent further exposure of their alleged corruption and cronyism. “Mr. Campbell is simply doing his constitutional duty,” the Opposition said. As a member of the NRF Investment Committee, Campbell is protecting the people’s interests and safeguarding our national wealth from the wasteful and corrupt practices of the Irfaan Ali/Bharrat Jagdeo regime, the Opposition asserted.
The Opposition has called on all “decent Guyanese” to condemn these actions and to rally behind Campbell, warning that any attack on him is an attack on the Opposition and all law-abiding citizens of the country. They also urged the government to abandon these efforts and allow for the proper functioning of democratic institutions.
In a further criticism of the PPP, the Opposition called for the depoliticisation of the Guyana Police Force. They argued that the police force must return to its original mandate of being a professional institution, ensuring that no one, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law. “The police force must serve the people of Guyana, not the political interests of the PPP,” said the Opposition representative. “We demand that those within the government who are violating the law be investigated and held accountable.”
The Opposition also warned that with elections on the horizon, the PPP may attempt to stoke political and racial tensions in a desperate effort to regain support. The statement urged Guyanese citizens to stay vigilant and resist any such divisive attempts.
While the PPP may resort to desperate measures, we stand firm in our commitment to expose corruption, protect the rights of all citizens, and preserve the unity of our nation, the Opposition concluded. The Opposition is urging every Guyanese to fight against PPP corruption, incompetence, and divisiveness.
