Citizens across Guyana are beginning to connect the dots on a series of land acquisitions involving “shady characters” who appeared to wield significant influence under both past and present administrations of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C).
At the heart of the latest scandal is Dr. Phillip Baldeo, a prominent figure whose real estate ventures have raised eyebrows, particularly with his acquisition of large plots of land in various parts of the country. The tale behind the acquisition of the East Bank land, as reported by this publication, is where things begin to get murky.
According to a reliable source, years ago, a former president of Guyana had a private meeting with Dr. Baldeo at the Pegasus Hotel. The two men then took a drive to a plot of land on the East Bank, where an agreement was made: Dr. Baldeo was to develop the area for residential housing, and the deal was worth a staggering 2.8 million US dollars.
However, this publication’s investigation revealed that the payment was not routed through Guyana’s Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) as it should have been, raising questions about the legitimacy of the deal.
In an exclusive interview with HGP Nightly News, Dr. Baldeo discussed his real estate activities, shedding light on how he managed to amass a significant portion of Guyana’s land. One of the most pressing topics covered during the interview was his acquisition of a large plot that would eventually be developed into a housing community—a project that promised to bring much-needed homes to the population but ended up embroiled in controversy.
Part of the agreement included the construction of essential infrastructure—roads and lights—to make the area livable for future homeowners. But according to sources close to the matter, the former president failed to ensure that this part of the deal was honored. The lack of infrastructure led to growing discontent among the homeowners, who, frustrated by the stalled development, took the matter to court.
The court ruled in favour of the homeowners, ordering Dr. Baldeo to complete the infrastructure works. As a result, roads are now being built, albeit years later, using Guyana’s taxpayer money. The work is currently being handled by 17 different contractors, all hired to finish the job that should have been completed long ago.
However, during his interview with HGP Nightly News, Dr. Baldeo denied any financial wrongdoing and claimed that he was personally funding the infrastructure works, drawing money from his real estate business and his medical practice in the United States. He presented this as a gesture of good faith, but critics were quick to point out that his claims seemed to contradict the reality of taxpayer money being used for the roads.
Village Voice News was able to obtain text messages that support the accusations made in this investigation, further strengthening the case that something is amiss in these land deals.
