Shadow Minister of Housing and Water, Annette Ferguson, expressed her privilege in serving the community during the holiday season. Last Christmas Eve, with the support of various organisations and individuals, the Ruimveldt Transformation Group (RTG) was able to distribute its Annual Hampers, providing much-needed relief to those in need.

Ferguson, who is responsible for the East-West Ruimveldt constituency and chairs the RTG, reflected on the importance of being present for her community. “People matter, the constituency matters, and I am grateful to be in service to the people,” Ferguson shared, highlighting the positive impact of the day’s activities. She also offered gratitude to Jehovah, saying, “To God be the glory, great things He has done!”

The Ruimveldt Transformation Group, an organised body of professionals, is dedicated to humanitarian and social work. The parliamentarian emphasised that the annual hamper distribution is just one of many ongoing community outreach efforts led by the group. These activities, aimed at supporting the vulnerable and empowering individuals, are done regularly, alongside other initiatives.

Ferguson explained to Village Voice News the hamper distribution is one aspect of the group’s efforts to uplift the community. The group has also been involved in empowering local residents, such as assisting individuals in accessing resources to improve their lives. She noted that at one point, the group even offered lessons to primary school children, though this programme was temporarily halted. However, she assured that the lessons will resume soon, with the group remaining optimistic about continuing their work in 2025.

Ferguson expressed her deep commitment to ensuring that the RTG continues its service in the coming year. She remains hopeful that a government will emerge that will truly serve all the people of Guyana, one that upholds the unity and aspiration of “One People, One Nation, One Destiny,” per the national motto.

In reflecting on Guyana’s oil-rich economy, Ferguson voiced her concern about the prevailing issue of poverty in the country. “In this oil-rich economy, no Guyanese should be without basic commodities and resources,” she said. “Yet, this remains a serious issue, with many still left without and at least half the population living in poverty. This is a crying shame when we have so much.”

She, however, said she remains optimistic. What is her plan for 2025: to continue her dedication to the community and push from greater attention to the needs of all Guyanese.
