Opinion: An Inept Government’s Callous Disregard for the Elderly and Vulnerable

"The people of Guyana deserve better than a government that is perpetually unprepared, uncaring, and incapable of addressing the simplest of needs"

The tragic events surrounding the recent cash grant distribution in New Amsterdam, Berbice, are a glaring indictment of the incompetence and indifference that have become hallmarks of this government. What should have been a straightforward process to provide relief to pensioners—many of whom are disabled and among the most vulnerable in society—descended into chaos, culminating in the horrifying report of a senior citizen suffering a stroke while waiting in line.

This is not an isolated incident; it is emblematic of a government that has repeatedly failed to plan, organize, and execute even the simplest initiatives. Hundreds of elderly citizens, some with disabilities, were forced to endure long waits in sweltering conditions, only to discover that their names were inexplicably missing from the list. The government’s ineptitude extended to creating confusion among recipients who had already traveled from as far as Corentyne, only to be met with bureaucratic disarray.

The so-called “minor hiccups” that reportedly disrupted the process are, in reality, unacceptable failures that risked lives. The fact that individuals fainted and one reportedly suffered a stroke is a damning reflection of the utter disregard for basic human dignity and safety. To leave the elderly waiting in poorly managed conditions is not just incompetent; it is cruel.

What’s worse is the alarming predictability of this fiasco. Time and again, this government has demonstrated an uncanny ability to botch even the most essential programs. From mismanaged public infrastructure to corruption scandals, there seems to be no limit to the administration’s failures. This latest debacle is just another example of a leadership that prioritizes grandstanding over genuine governance, leaving the citizenry to bear the brunt of their shortcomings.

Accountability is overdue. Those responsible for this farce must be held to account, and the government must immediately overhaul its approach to such initiatives. The vulnerable cannot be made to suffer because of negligence masquerading as minor errors. The people of Guyana deserve better than a government that is perpetually unprepared, uncaring, and incapable of addressing the simplest of needs.

This incident is a sobering reminder of why the public’s faith in the administration continues to erode. The question remains; how many more lives will be put at risk before the government begins to take its responsibilities seriously? For the sake of our nation’s most vulnerable, let us hope this debacle serves as a wake-up call. But given this administration’s track record, that hope may be misplaced.
