Christmas is a season of joy and togetherness. It is one of the most cherished holidays around the world. It is a time filled with joy, love, and the spirit of giving. Rooted in Christian tradition, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, but over the centuries, it has also become a cultural celebration embraced by people of various beliefs.

However, for some, they are celebrating without a loved one, whether due to loss, distance, or other circumstances, the season can feel bittersweet.

The absence of a loved ones is a reminder of the irreplaceable role they play in shaping cherished holiday memories.

This publication interviewed Mr. Joel Vogt, who spoke about how he celebrates Christmas after losing his mom in 2021.

For Joel, Christmas hasn’t been the same since 2021—the last holiday he spent with his mother, Angela Vogt.

After relocating to live with his aunt and her family, who do not celebrate Christmas, Joel admits that the festive season has lost much of its joy.

“I used to love putting up the Christmas tree and decorations with my mom when she was alive…..It was something I genuinely enjoyed,” he shared.

Reflecting on the holidays, Joel notes that the season now brings a lingering sense of emptiness.

“The holidays just don’t feel the same as they used to. There’s always that empty feeling inside, and I miss

her a lot around this time. I think anyone who has lost someone close would feel the same,” Joel said.

One of Joel’s favourite Christmas memories was shopping with his mother. “I always looked forward to it, especially shopping at Courts—that was her number one store during the holidays. We would always go there together,” he reminisced.

For Joel, another cherished tradition was decorating the house.

“Growing up, putting up the decor was always my task, and I continued doing it as a young adult before she passed,” Joel recalled.

While the magic of Christmas feels distant, Joel’s memories serve as a poignant reminder of the special bond he shared with his mother during the holidays—a bond that continues to shape how he remembers and cherishes the season.
