Starting 8 January 2025, it is mandatory for all Guyanese nationals travelling to the United Kingdom (UK) without a visa to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new requirement applies to most visa-exempt travellers and is part of the UK’s efforts to enhance border security and improve the travel experience.

Applications for an ETA are now open. You can apply via the UK ETA app—available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store—or through the official GOV.UK website. The process is simple, takes less than 15 minutes, and costs £10. Decisions are typically provided within three working days, and app users may receive quicker responses. Once approved, the ETA will allow multiple trips to the UK for up to six months per visit, lasting either two years or until the passport linked to the application expires—whichever comes first.

Travellers arriving in the UK on 8 January 2025 must secure ETA approval beforehand, so those flying late on 7 January 2025 should ensure their ETA is in place. If an application is refused, travellers must apply for a UK visa.

The ETA requirement does not apply to British or Irish passport holders, or those travelling to the Turks and Caicos Islands or other British Overseas Territories.

The introduction of the ETA system aligns with the UK’s commitment to making travel safer and more efficient, mirroring similar systems used in the US and Australia. Guyanese travellers are encouraged to apply early to avoid delays. For more information or to start your application, visit the GOV.UK website or download the UK ETA app today.

Frequently Asked Questions: UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for Guyanese Travellers

  1. What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The ETA is a new travel requirement for visa-exempt nationals, including Guyanese travellers, who wish to visit the United Kingdom. It is a pre-travel clearance system that ensures travellers meet the UK’s entry requirements before departure.

  1. When will the ETA requirement begin?

Eligible non-Europeans can now apply for an ETA and will need an ETA to travel from 8 January 2025.

  1. Who needs an ETA?

Guyanese nationals and other travellers who do not require a visa to visit the UK must apply for an ETA. British, Irish, and British Overseas Territories passport holders are exempt, as are travellers solely visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands or other British Overseas Territories.

  1. How do I apply for an ETA?

Applications can be made:

  • Via the UK ETA app (available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store)
  • On the GOV.UK website

The process is simple, takes under 15 minutes, and costs £10.

  1. How long does it take to get an ETA decision?

Decisions are usually issued within three working days, but you may receive a quicker response if you apply using the UK ETA app.

  1. How long is the ETA valid?

The ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple visits to the UK, with each stay lasting up to six months.

  1. What happens if my ETA application is refused?

If your ETA is refused, you will need to apply for a UK visa.

  1. Do children need an ETA?

Yes, all travellers, including children, must have an ETA. Parents or guardians can complete the application on behalf of minors.

  1. Do I need an ETA if I’m transiting through the UK?

Yes, if you’re transiting through the UK without a visa, you will still need an ETA.

  1. How do I know if I’m exempt from the ETA?

You do not need an ETA if you are:

  • A British or Irish citizen
  • Travelling with a British Overseas Territories passport
  • Visiting only the Turks and Caicos Islands or other British Overseas Territories
  1. What should I do if my travel plans change?

If you obtain a new passport or your travel details change, you must reapply for an ETA.

  1. Where can I get more information?

For full details and to apply, visit the GOV.UK website or download the UK ETA app.
