India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will pay a State Visit to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana from November 19 to 21, 2024. So said the Office of the President in a release. The visit, resulting from an invitation by President Irfaan Ali, the government says, underlines the historically strong relations between the two countries.

In January 2023, Ali visited the country as the Chief Guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, where he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.

Modi has a packed three-day schedule which will include: –

  • Engaging in summit-level bilateral discussions with President Irfaan Ali;
  • Co-chairing the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, Guyana, alongside the Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, and President Ali;
  • Addressing the National Assembly;
  • Addressing the Indian community and the Indian diaspora in Guyana;
  • Lying a floral tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Promenade Garden in Georgetown, which was installed in 1969 during the Mahatma Gandhi centenary celebrations;
  • Visiting the Indian Arrival Monument in the Monument Garden, which commemorates the arrival of the first ship carrying Indian indentured labourers to the Caribbean. The ship arrived on the shores of the then British Guiana in 1838.

Guyana and India established diplomatic relations on May 26, 1966, the day eh country gained independence
