For many young people, a hobby is simply a way to unwind after school or work. But for some, a hobby can evolve into something much bigger—a passion, a calling, and even a business. This was the case for 24-year-old Amela Thursday, a talented young girl with a love for braiding.

What started as a pastime has now grown into a successful business inspiring others to pursue their dreams. Leaping from a stable job—or a simple hobby—into a full-time entrepreneurial venture can be intimidating. Yet for those who succeed, the rewards are unmatched. Entrepreneurs like Amela Thuesday show that with vision, persistence, and a supportive network, it’s possible to turn a personal passion into a thriving career.

24-year-old Amela Thuesday, who hails from Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice (Region 5), has turned her hobby into a business. Thuesday enjoyed braiding hair in her free time, which assisted in honing her skills as she aimed to become an entrepreneur and hairstylist.

Work done by Amela Thuesday

Thuesday’s journey into the world of braiding began in her early teens. She started practicing with friends and family members, trying out different styles and experimenting with unique patterns. Over time, her creativity and attention to details quickly made her a sought-after stylist in her neighborhood. Braiding was not only a way for Amela to express her artistic side but also a means of connecting with others, giving her the confidence to take her hobby to the next level

As she gained more experience and clients, she realised that she could turn her talent into a profitable venture. She took the bold step of starting her own business. She showcases her work via WhatsApp. Word also spread quickly, and soon Thuesday’s calendar was filled with appointments. Friends and family offered advice and support, but the journey wasn’t without its challenges.

Running a braiding business comes with its own unique set of difficulties.  After spending long hours standing, and braiding it eventually led to physical strain, particularly back pain, and fatigue. But Thuesday’s determination kept her going. She invested in ergonomic tools and learned techniques to minimize strain, and she made time for self-care to stay healthy and focused.

She said, “My passion for entrepreneurship stemmed from my desire to be a strong, independent woman capable of providing myself with a comfortable and enjoyable life.”

She knew that, to grow her business, she needed to create a brand that reflected her values and style, as such she chose a name, designed a logo, and used WhatsApp to promote and build a loyal following. Her brand became known for intricate, high-quality braids and a friendly, welcoming experience for clients. Through her dedication to excellence, Amela earned a reputation as a reliable, skilled stylist who truly cared about her clients. Her commitment to quality and customer satisfaction earned her rave reviews and a loyal client base. Each step forward brought new learning opportunities, and Thuesday adapted to each challenge with a positive mindset and determination to succeed.

Thuesday, attributes her success thus far to several individuals, who have consistently supported and motivated her in transforming her hobby into a career.

“I am also grateful for the remarkable individuals who have mentored and guided me throughout my journey. Their wisdom and experiences have enhanced my skills and instilled in me patience and discipline,” she stated.

“Surround yourself with people who genuinely have your best interests at heart. Some may only support you when it benefits them. Never give up on your dreams; while you work towards making them a reality, pursue what you love, regardless of how insignificant it may seem. Ignore the opinions of others and take that bold step, just as I did in turning my passion into a profitable venture,” is her advice to youths.

Amela’s story offers essential insights for those considering the leap into entrepreneurship. Pursue what you love, find people who will support you, and be willing to work hard to transform your dreams into reality. In the end, the journey is as fulfilling as the destination.
