Tia Tappin, is a recent graduate of Cyril Potter College of Education. She graduated on 25th of October, 2024, with an Associate Degree in Education (Primary – pass with credit) at CPCE’s 90th convocation ceremony.

“Growing up, my journey was far from straightforward, but it’s one that has built resilience, faith, and an unwavering passion for teaching,” Tappin said.

Her decision to pursue a career in education was fueled by her strong belief in the transformative power of learning, as she wanted a profession that aligned with her purpose as well as allowing her to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young learners.

She added, “Teaching offers me the unique joy of guiding young minds and inspiring them in ways that will last a lifetime. This desire to serve and nurture the future generation became a calling I couldn’t ignore, leading me to make the leap into the field of education.”

After pursuing other educational and professional experiences, Tia joined teaching. Previously, she studied at the Ministry of Health and worked as an environmental health assistant at the RDC Region 6, then she read for a diploma in public management which brought her fulfilment, but something was still missing. She longed for a career that would motivate her every day, as well as where she felt her contributions mattered deeply. This conviction led her to pursue an associate degree at the Cyril Potter College of Education whilst teaching. Now, Tia is at the University of Guyana, reading for a Bachelor of Education in Primary Education.

“The road to becoming a teacher came with its challenges. My college years were marked by sleepless nights, stress, and moments of doubt. In my first semester, I struggled with the new expectations and demands that college life brought. Adjusting was difficult, but I stayed focused, guided by my faith and the unwavering support of my family. Over time, classes became easier to manage, and I pushed forward, trusting that my determination and faith would see me through,” Tappin mentioned.

Tia and her parents

Tia expressed deep gratitude to her parents, who have been her biggest supporters. Her mom, a registered nurse, is a prayer warrior, her anchor and a source of immense strength in my life. In her younger years, her mom had to leave high school when she became pregnant with Tappin. However, determined to create a better future for herself and her family, she later returned to school, earned her CXC qualifications, showing Tappin, the power of perseverance. Her deep faith and resilience have been a constant inspiration for Tappin. Her favourite verse in the Bible is: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Her father, a taxi driver, has also been an unshakeable pillar of support. He stood by her through countless late nights, offering encouragement when challenges felt overwhelming. From financial support to emotional guidance, his commitment to Tappin’s success never wavered. Together, her parents’ sacrifices, faith, and dedication taught her the true meaning of resilience.

Tia’s inspiring journey is one of persistence. Academically, she struggled in her early years and initially failed both Maths and English at CXC. Her mother’s faith and  inspiring words kept her going, encouraging her to try again, while her father’s confidence in her abilities made her believe that she could overcome any obstacle if she worked hard enough. Eventually, she rewrote and passed both subjects and continued forward.

“Don’t give up. The path may be unclear, and setbacks are part of the journey. If you fail, try again. If you need to try a third time, do it with pride. Embrace your journey, hold tight to your faith, and don’t allow financial or personal struggles to stand in your way. Remember, the same opportunities are available to all, no matter where you come from. Always believe in yourself, and aim high. The sky is truly the limit, but even when you reach the skies, aim for the stars, the moon, and even the entire galaxy,” is Tappin’s advice.
