By Mark DaCosta- Recent revelations and new allegations surrounding the murders of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing and the controversial police involvement in the death of Uree Varswyck have ignited intense scrutiny over the relationships among law enforcement, politicians, and criminal networks in our nation.

According to official reports, Uree Varswyck, a former police officer, escaped from Camp Street Prison on July 9, 2017, after inmates instigated a fire as a diversion. However, a confidential source claims that this escape was part of a larger conspiracy involving certain politicians and members of the police force, orchestrating the prison disturbances and Varswyck’s subsequent actions.

The source alleges that Varswyck was approached with a chilling proposition: to assassinate Crum-Ewing. This demand reportedly originated from a political figure. When Varswyck refused, he faced retaliation from the Guyana Police Force. His troubled history includes charges related to the December 2014 murder of security guard Wilfred Stewart and the execution-style killing of GGMC engineer Trevor Abrams in 2015. Varswyck had reportedly been diligently documenting evidence of alleged illegal orders from his superiors, including recordings that could expose corruption within the police ranks.

Crum-Ewing’s assassination on March 10, 2015, stands as a tragic focal point in this narrative. A vocal advocate for political reform, Crum-Ewing was gunned down in the Diamond Housing Scheme while urging residents to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming May elections. On the day of his death, he was distributing flyers and calling on citizens to hold politicians accountable. Earlier, he had staged a prominent one-man protest outside the Office of Attorney General Anil Nandlall, demanding his resignation due to various allegations of misconduct.

The circumstances of Crum-Ewing’s killing were particularly harrowing. As he was making his way home, he was approached by assailants who opened fire, striking him multiple times. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Crum-Ewing fall to the ground, bleeding and unresponsive. Despite pleas for justice and accountability, the aftermath of his murder revealed deep-seated concerns about the safety of political activists in our country, raising alarms about potential political interference in law enforcement.

In the wake of Crum-Ewing’s murder, accusations emerged regarding the involvement of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in fostering a climate of fear to silence dissent. Critics argue that the police have historically failed to protect citizens advocating for political accountability, particularly when those advocates challenge entrenched power structures.

The troubling implications of Varswyck’s alleged connections to both Crum-Ewing’s murder and broader prison corruption have sparked calls for a thorough investigation. Citizens demand transparency and accountability from both the police and the political establishment, as suspicions of collusion continue to undermine trust in our institutions.

As our country faces these critical challenges, the integrity of our political and law enforcement systems is being tested. The ongoing investigation serves as a crucial moment for citizens to demand justice and reform, ensuring that the sacrifices of activists like Crum-Ewing are not forgotten.

It is essential for the populace to remain vigilant and engaged, advocating for a system where accountability prevails over corruption. The recent events highlight the urgent need for reforms in our institutions to safeguard democracy and to uphold the rule of law, ensuring that every citizen can engage in political discourse without fear of violence or reprisal.
