Berbice, Guyana – Police are currently investigating an alleged robbery at a jewelry and pawnshop in New Amsterdam, Berbice, that resulted in one alleged suspect being fatally shot by the establishment’s owner. The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2024, at the intersection of Trinity Street and Main Road.
According to police reports, it is alleged that two males armed with handguns, and dressed in hoodies, entered the pawnshop and began their robbery, during which they shot a customer in the right leg. As the commotion unfolded, the proprietor, who is a licensed firearm holder, responded by firing shots at the suspects, prompting them to flee the scene.
Despite fleeing with stolen items, the suspects discharged several rounds as they escaped. The pair reportedly ran into the nearby New Amsterdam Primary School compound, where one of the suspects collapsed. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered the suspect lying face up with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Taurus 9mm handgun, a magazine with live rounds, and some of the stolen items were allegedly found in the deceased suspect’s possession and scattered nearby.
The second suspect is still at large, and law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into the incident. Police have not yet released any further details about the suspects or the identity of the pawnshop owner.
