The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has announced the launch of its Global Survey on Indigenous Peoples and the Media. UNESCO in a release said it is excited about the survey, which aims to gather critical insights on how media organisations, including Indigenous and mainstream media, operate and serve their communities.

The data collected will inform a comprehensive study to be presented at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in 2025 to promote the rights of Indigenous Peoples to freedom of expression and information. Please help us to ensure that the perspectives of Indigenous media from the Caribbean are included in the study.

The survey is divided in two separate parts:

SURVEY 1 – To collect data from Indigenous-led media organizations

  • Takes 20 minutes to complete
  • Respondents must work in Indigenous media organizations
  • Submit responses by 30 September 2024
  • Click on the following link to take the survey: https://forms.microsoft.com/e/WpjL3pgSrA

SURVEY 2 – To collect data from mainstream media organizations

  • Takes 15 minutes to complete
  • Respondents must work in media organizations not established or run by Indigenous Peoples
  • Submit responses by 30 September 2024
  • Click on the following link to take the survey: https://forms.office.com/e/PG5UwSpGsp

UNESCO urged support is crucial for ensuring the success of its initiative. “It is essential that this survey reaches a wide audience to accurately reflect the experiences and challenges faced by media organisations globally to better serve Indigenous audiences, the body appealed

According to the international body results of the survey will support the consolidation of recommendations for action to advance the implementation of Article 16 on Media of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). We deeply appreciate your continued commitment. We are available should you require any additional information.

When the UNESCO speaks about the Indigenous people, the organisation means the First People of every society. For example the First People of Guyana will not be the First People of Africa, India, England, etc.
