The family of Sir Shridath “Sonny” Ramphal has announced his peaceful passing on August 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving children. Born on October 3, 1928, in New Amsterdam, British Guiana (now Guyana), Sir Shridath was a luminary in international diplomacy and a revered elder statesman in the Commonwealth and Caribbean communities.

A graduate of King’s College London and Gray’s Inn, his influential career spanned across several pivotal roles including Assistant Attorney-General of the West Indies Federation, Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs of Guyana, and Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. He was also the Chancellor of the University of Guyana, the University of the West Indies, and Warwick University.

Sir Shridath was globally recognized for his contributions to environmental, developmental, and disarmament issues, serving on all the Global Commissions from 1980 to 1995. His leadership of the West Indian Commission led to the 1992 report, “Time for Action,” a key document for Caribbean development.

His role as the longest-serving Commonwealth Secretary-General from 1975 to 1990 was marked by his staunch opposition to institutional racism, significantly contributing to the end of apartheid in South Africa. Nelson Mandela once praised him as a man “who have chosen the whole world as their theatre” in their fight for human justice.

Even in his later years, Sir Shridath continued to serve with distinction, representing Guyana at the International Court of Justice during the COVID-19 pandemic. His numerous accolades included the Order of the Caribbean Community, the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and the Order of New Zealand, among others.

Sir Shridath was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Lady Lois Ramphal. His legacy as a champion for justice and development continues to inspire generations across the globe. The announcement was made on behalf of his family by his son-in-law, Sir Ronald Sanders.
