By Mark DaCosta- The Alliance For Change (AFC) – in a written statement – has issued a stern warning to the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regarding its handling of a formal complaint made by Rickford Burke, a dual citizen of Guyana and the United States. Burke, a prominent Guyanese American activist and president of the Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID), is known for his outspoken criticism of the Guyanese government, particularly regarding issues of corruption, governance, and human rights. His complaint, reportedly now under investigation by US Federal Law Enforcement, has sparked significant concern.
Burke, who has lived in the United States for many years, has been a vocal advocate for democratic reforms in Guyana. Through his work with the CGID, he has frequently challenged the actions of the PPP government, accusing it of engaging in racism, corrupt practices and undermining democratic institutions. His activism has made him a polarising figure, both in the diaspora and at home, where his criticisms have often been met with sharp rebuke from government officials.
The AFC’s concerns are rooted in what the party describes as a pattern of hostility from the PPP towards those who oppose or criticise it. This pattern, the party argues, is evident in the government’s response to Burke’s complaint. Rather than addressing the substance of the allegations, the AFC contends that the PPP has opted to discredit Burke personally, using ad hominem attacks and threats instead of engaging with the issues at hand. The party suggests that this approach is symptomatic of a broader trend within the PPP administration, where dissent is not tolerated, and those who challenge the government are targeted.
The complaint lodged by Burke has not only attracted attention in the United States but has also heightened political tensions in Guyana. The AFC argues that the PPP’s reaction to the complaint is part of a dangerous trajectory where the government is increasingly adopting authoritarian practices. This concern is compounded by recent incidents involving the government’s criticism of Justices Gino Persaud and Simone Morris-Ramlall following unfavourable High Court rulings. The AFC believes these actions demonstrate a clear pattern of the government behaving as a “despotic regime” that does not tolerate opposition or dissent.
Moreover, the AFC has expressed alarm over what it sees as the PPP’s selective application of justice. While the government has been quick to attack critics like Burke, the AFC alleges that it has shown blatant favouritism towards a small elite group described as “friends, family and favourites,” who continue to benefit disproportionately from the nation’s resources. This, the AFC argues, reflects a system that prioritises the interests of a privileged few while marginalising ordinary citizens and stifling legitimate criticism.
The AFC’s statement also highlights the potential international ramifications of the PPP’s handling of the Burke complaint. With US Federal Law Enforcement reportedly now involved, the stakes are high, and any perceived mishandling of the situation could damage Guyana’s international reputation as a free and democratic nation. The AFC is urging the government to exercise caution, professionalism, and restraint in dealing with the matter to avoid further negative consequences on the global stage.
Rickford Burke’s prominence as an activist and critic of the Guyanese government has made him a central figure in the ongoing debate over governance and accountability in Guyana. His complaint, and the subsequent investigation, have put the spotlight on the PPP’s handling of dissent and its commitment to democratic principles.
The AFC’s call for professionalism and restraint in the government’s response to Burke’s complaint underscores the fragile state of democracy in our nation.
