By Mark DaCosta- The opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has also condemned recent actions by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, which they perceive as interference in the judicial system. Jagdeo’s public criticism of Senior Magistrate Leron Daly presiding over the trial of nine accused in election matters, along with his comments on the general administration of justice, has sparked outrage.
Jagdeo invited international observers and the international community to view the proceedings to ensure accountability. However, the opposition claims this move is an attempt to coerce the court into finding the accused guilty regardless of the evidence.
The opposition argues that the Vice President’s allegations against the senior magistrate, including accusations of entertaining frivolous objections, failing to record evidence, and suppressing evidence, are baseless and intended to undermine the integrity of the judiciary.
“Jagdeo must know that there will be serious consequences should he go down his chosen path to a conviction. The law should be allowed to take its course free from political interference,” the opposition warned.
The political opposition has cautioned the government to focus its energies and resources on conducting serious and impartial investigations into corrupt practices within its ranks rather than attempting to manipulate judicial proceedings.
As Guyana approaches General and Regional Elections, the opposition stresses the importance of allowing the judiciary to operate independently. They accuse the government of attempting to influence court outcomes and instilling fear in the judiciary, thereby undermining the democratic process.
Jagdeo’s attack on Magistrate Leron Daly is not unlike Attorney General Anil Nandlall’s assault on Judge Gino Persaud for a recent ruling in the High Court.
