Chairman Lincoln Lewis and Vice Chairman, former Mayor Pt Ubraj Narine of the Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD), over the weekend visited Kuru Kururu on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway and engaged residents on pressing community concerns. The visit highlighted several unaddressed issues affecting the livelihoods of Kuru Kururu residents. The team took the opportunity to distribute food hampers and farming tools to the residents.
Among the residents’ concerns are:
1. 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
Residents expressed deep disappointment regarding unfulfilled promises of land regularization dating back to commitments made by Attorney General Hon. Anil Nandlall during his time in opposition.
Despite assurances that regularization would occur upon the PPP’s return to government in 2020, no progress has been made, leaving residents uncertain about their land tenure they live on over 30 years. Residents all also make mention of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission leasing out Lands in the same area which they had applied for numerous times.
2. 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬:
The PPP government had pledged to provide essential services such as electricity and water to the residents of Kuru Kururu. However, to date, these promises remain unfulfilled, significantly impacting the quality of life for residents.
3. 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬:
The Community Development Council (CDC) Chairman acknowledged obstacles in executing promised infrastructure developments, attributing delays to directives allegedly from Minister Kwame McCoy and PPP activist Michelle Despite assurances of providing black tanks per household, these commitments have yet to materialize, leaving the community underserved and neglected.
4. 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬:
Kuru Kururu continues to face challenges due to the absence of critical infrastructure like a health centre, roads, and police outpost in close proximity, significantly affecting public safety and access to healthcare services.
Chairman Lincoln Lewis emphasised the Institute’s commitment to advocating for justice and fairness, calling for urgent action to address these long-standing issues affecting Kuru Kururu residents. He stated, “It is unacceptable that promises made to the community have not been fulfilled, perpetuating hardship and uncertainty among residents.”
Vice Chairman Pt Ubraj Narine reiterated the Institute’s stance on combating discrimination and inequality, urging the PPP government to prioritize the welfare and rights of all citizens, particularly those in marginalized communities.
The PPP government continued to use and abused our indigenous people. We must remember the hardship that the PPP government put you and your children through at the time of election, we must vote the PPP government out of office come 2025.
