Dean of the University of Guyana’s School of Graduate Studies, Dr Paulette Bynoe, on Friday, June 22, delivered her thought-provoking inaugural Professorial Lecture, titled; “Managing Guyana’s Water Resources in a Changing Climate: An Imperative for a Resilient Future,” marking her ascension to the rank of professor.
Professor Bynoe, an internationally-renowned expert on climate change and water resources management, delivered her lecture at the university’s Education Lecture Theatre, Turkeyen Campus where she made a passionate plea for the legal and regulatory framework to be established to ensure sustainable water management practices is supported at all levels of the society. Professor Bynoe used scientific data to show the positive results that could be derived if our water resources are managed in a sustainable and responsible manner noting that this is essential for the nation’s resilience in the face of climate change.
In her opening remarks, VC Professor Mohamed Martin congratulated Professor Bynoe on her accomplishments and contributions over the years to the university community, the country and the region. She noted the rigorous process that the university follows before someone is appointed to the rank of professor. “I am immensely proud to see her rise to this esteemed rank. Her exceptional contributions as a climate scientist and academic have greatly benefited our region and beyond. Professor Bynoe’s commitment to excellence and integrity is a testament to her remarkable character and dedication.”
University Registrar, Dr Nigel Gravesande, who chaired the proceedings said, “Professor Paulette Bynoe’s scholarly contributions in water and climate research have had a profound impact, not only within our university but across the Commonwealth. Her work continues to inspire and shape sustainable strategies to address global climate challenges. It is an honour to celebrate her achievements and recognise her as a leading figure in environmental science.”
Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Engagement, Professor Emanuel Cummings, in providing a detailed introduction to Professor Bynoe, noted her significant contributions to the university community and public service as a whole. He said that the University is very fortunate to have her as part of its faculty as she possesses a wealth of knowledge in numerous areas, especially as it relates to climate change and water management.
With approximately 24 years of professional experience, Professor Bynoe is an interdisciplinary trained Environmental Specialist. She is renowned for her contributions to environmental education and policy. Professor Bynoe teaches graduate courses in community disaster risk management, environmental impact assessment, environmental research methods, and environmental resources policy. Her research spans natural resources and environmental policy, sustainable livelihoods, climate change and disaster vulnerability and resilience, and environmental education.
Professor Bynoe holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Sussex, an MPhil in Environmental Education from the University of Bradford, and a BA in Geography from the University of Guyana. Her dedication to environmental education and research earned her the Golden Arrow of Achievement in 2015 in recognition of her work on environmental policies and education.
Her international roles have been equally impressive, having served as Lead Climate Change Negotiator for Guyana (2016-2019), Lead Climate Change Negotiator for G77 and China (2020), and Mentor for the Commonwealth Futures Climate Research Cohort (2021). Additionally, she has coordinated high-level climate actions and is a member of several prestigious committees, including the Global Water Partnership and the Pool of Experts for the World Ocean Assessment III. Professor Bynoe also co-chairs the Informal Advisory Group on Technical and Scientific Cooperation under the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD).
Among those present at the event were; Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George-Wiltshire, Brigadier (Rtd) Joseph Sigh, relatives, Pastors and members of Professor Bynoe’s church, university colleagues, and other well-wishers.
