By Mark DaCosta- The 54th anniversary of Linden’s establishment marked a historic milestone for the town, defying political challenges and emerging as a resounding success. Despite alleged attempts by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regime to disrupt the event, the community’s resilience and unity ensured that Linden Town Week 2024 became a significant chapter in Guyana’s history.

From April 26 to May 6, Linden Town Week unfolded under the theme “We are One People, One Nation, One Destiny. Linden! The heart of Guyana.” The eleven-day celebration showcased Linden’s rich cultural heritage and community spirit, culminating in an international concert featuring musical icon Rick Ross. This event left both Lindeners and visitors in awe of the impressive organisation and high entertainment value.

The festivities, meticulously planned by the Linden Town Week Committee in collaboration with the Linden Mayor and Town Council, included a diverse array of activities, with a notable emphasis on non-fete events that fostered community engagement and cultural enrichment. The programme featured art exhibitions, sports competitions, community service projects, and educational workshops, all embodying Linden’s historical significance and vibrant spirit.

Economically, Linden Town Week proved to be a boon for local vendors, who reported high sales and strong support from attendees. This influx of economic activity contributed to the vibrant atmosphere, allowing residents and visitors to revel in the festivities.

However, the celebration was not without its challenges. On May 3, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) issued a perplexing statement, announcing their apparent refusal to provide security for concerts and other activities during a critical period of the town’s festivities. The cryptic phrasing of the statement left many baffled, but for the residents of Linden, the intent seemed clear. One concerned Lindener, articulated the community’s sentiment, suggesting that this move was a calculated attempt to sabotage the highly anticipated events.

This decision by the GPF sparked outrage and accusations of political manipulation, with some alleging that the PPP regime aimed to undermine the prosperity and cultural expression of non-PPP-affiliated Black communities in Linden. Another observer, described the police’s stance as a “blatant economic boycott against the people of Linden,” implying that such measures were taken with the tacit approval of the ruling government.

In response to the backlash, the GPF eventually sent a few officers to the event, but their presence was largely passive. According to Mayor Sharma Raheem Solomon, who spoke with the Village Voice News, the officers did little beyond standing around and not even directing traffic. Despite this, the community’s determination prevailed. Mayor Solomon declared, “The event was a resounding success,” highlighting that public pressure had forced the GPF to back down, albeit minimally.

The Mayor went on to express optimism for the future, asserting that next year’s event will be “even bigger, better, and more spectacular.” His words to this publication will certainly resonate with the community, reinforcing the spirit of resilience and unity that had carried Linden Town Week 2024 to its triumphant conclusion.

As we reflect on this momentous occasion at the end of May, it is evident that Linden’s vibrant culture and strong sense of community have once again shone brightly, despite attempts to dampen the celebration. The successful execution of Linden Town Week 2024 stands as a testament to the town’s enduring legacy and its crucial role in shaping the trajectory of our nation.

Linden’s historical significance and its contributions to Guyana’s economy, particularly through sectors like logging, mining, and cottage industries, highlight the resilience and hard work of its residents. While challenges persist, the unity displayed during this year’s celebrations underscores the town’s resolve to continue thriving and celebrating its rich heritage.

As preparations begin for Linden Town Week 2025, the anticipation for an even grander celebration grows. The success of this year’s event has set a high standard, demonstrating that despite political obstacles, the heart of Guyana beats strongly in Linden.
