Dear Editor,

At the PSC’s 32 Annual General Meeting, His Excellency encouraged its membership “to fulfil its ‘national responsibility’ by duly paying their taxes” as was reported in The Guyana Chronicle, earlier in the week. By extension this applies to other members of civil society as well as rates & taxes at local NDCs.

The People Did Not Elect Government to Tell Them How to Eat

This week I went into Industry/Plaisance NDC to honour these obligations. On arrival at the counter, I stated the address whereupon the counter clerk asked name which I gave. She then asked for full name which I did not at that time have. At no time did she attempt to move any of the voluminous books sectioned off by area in front of her. Upon hearing I did not have the full name she stated she could not effect the payment for the rates & taxes at the address with the given surname. She also claimed there was no supervisor on site at that time and proceeded to shut her window. I returned on two separate occasions to effect payment without success. On each occasion was informed she was not at work and was the only person authorized to accept rate & taxes payment.

Earlier in this year rates & taxes were paid at City Hall with just the provision of property numbers. At both Better hope/LBI and Peter’s Hall NDCs the addresses & surnames were given, and payment effected without any problems or issues.

It would be helpful if Industry/Plaisance NDC would state fully all the particulars necessary to effect payment for rates & taxes at its offices on the Embankment road. This would greatly assist all especially the infirmed.

Yours truly,

Elizabeth Deane-Hughes
