In the face of formidable challenges, the International Decade for the People of African Descent Assembly – Guyana (IDPADA-G) is forging ahead with inspiring resilience and determination. Despite attempts by the Guyanese government to shut down this vital initiative, IDPADA-G is not only surviving but thriving, fueled by new funding and a steadfast commitment to community development.

IDPADA-G recently secured a generous grant of $110,000 from a US-based organization. These funds are earmarked for the ‘Enhanced Economic Participation and Development Project,’ which aims to empower agriculture-based member organizations and small-scale farmers. The project offers small grants to budding entrepreneurs and established businesses, providing a substantial boost to their economic activities.

Under this project, new and prospective entrepreneurs have the opportunity to receive GUY$400,000 each to jumpstart their ventures. Seasoned organizations can benefit from a more substantial grant of GUY$2 million, aiding in their growth and sustainability. According to Project Coordinator Roxanne Myers, 30 organizations have applied, with 25 set to be shortlisted based on their concept notes.

IDPADA-G’s commitment to capacity building was evident in the series of technical workshops held earlier this year. These workshops, which covered essential topics such as crop management, agro-processing, animal husbandry, packaging, and marketing, attracted 72 participants, with 50 successfully completing all sessions. This hands-on training has proven invaluable, equipping participants with the skills needed to elevate their agricultural practices and business operations.

Success Stories and Testimonials

One of the shining stars of this initiative is a 22-year-old Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) graduate, Kevin Somrah who has experienced a significant boost in his agricultural endeavors. Operating a farm in the Bonasika Creek, Region Three, he shared how the training has enriched his knowledge and skills in agriculture production, agro-processing, and marketing. “IDPADA-G has indeed filled that gap in order for me to become more successful in my business endeavors. Everything I have learned from these training sessions is applicable and has provided lots of hands-on experience,” he remarked, beaming with optimism for the future.

Leadership’s Perspective

IDPADA-G’s Project Coordinator, Roxanne Myers, emphasized the transformative power of the ‘Enhanced Economic Participation and Development Project.’ She explained that the project not only provides financial support but also essential knowledge and skills. “We were able to facilitate technical workshops from March through April, focusing on various crucial aspects of agriculture and business. This is a big area for those producing goods and seeking effective ways to market their products,” Myers explained.

Olive Sampson, CEO of IDPADA-G, spoke passionately about the organization’s resilience and dedication. Speaking on behalf of Chairman Vincent Alexander, Sampson highlighted the project’s success despite numerous challenges. “What has been achieved exemplifies the goals of the Decade and the dire need of our community in the face of historic adversity. Knowledge is an invaluable life-long and inter-generational asset. While material resources are necessary, none compare to the sustainable cornerstone of human development,” she stated, urging participants to apply their newfound skills to advance their farms and businesses.

Commitment to the Community

IDPADA-G remains steadfast in its mission to support the development of people of African descent. Transitioning from a government-funded organization to relying on local and international donors, IDPADA-G continues to execute its mandate with unwavering commitment. Despite the suspension of government funding in 2022 amid allegations of financial mismanagement—which the organization has firmly denied—IDPADA-G has adapted and persisted, showcasing its resilience and resourcefulness.

The journey of IDPADA-G is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and unwavering dedication. Through innovative projects and capacity-building initiatives, IDPADA-G is empowering individuals and organizations to thrive against all odds. As they continue to secure support and make strides in economic development, the organization embodies the spirit of hope and progress. With each success story, IDPADA-G reaffirms its commitment to the community, inspiring others to contribute to a brighter, more equitable future. (WiredJA)
