“PARLIAMENT IN THE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA, Raphael Trotman, SECOND Edition.”

This Book is an excellent documentation of events, challenging situations and the persons involved towards Guyana’s Parliamentary accomplishments and missed opportunities, in the evolution of parliamentary democracy in Guyana.
Guyana’s current Parliament is with political parties’ rivalries, which have sunk to exceptionally low levels of disrespect, across the isles. Readers of this book will learn that disagreements in the past, did not lead to disparagement of people.
I know from three firsthand experiences with Guyana’s outstanding past under the Distinguished Speakerships, of Sir Donald Edward Jackson (1957-1961) (my mentor); Rahman Bacchus Gajraj, CBE, JP. (1961-1964 & 1968-1971) ( my first Boss and mentor); and Sase Narain Esq. OR, SC, CMG. JP. (1971-1992). Parliamentary Democracy permits the Head of Government together with the Speaker, to set respectful tones for debates and disagreements with evidence towards the best outcomes for Guyana, as all Members of Parliament discharge their Oaths.
Author’s 3 QUOTES in the Book which sums up the KEY takeaways, the 3 Ms, Magic, Mystery, and Mishaps, “ Long ago, I discovered something interesting, which is that democracy, like love, is a many splendored thing – full of magic, mystery, and mishaps: but also, altogether exciting, and indefinable. Who is to say that one country’s democracy is any better than that of another country? The prize, I believe, goes to those nations that continually strive to grow, improve, and adapt to political change.”
QUOTE: “ The book goes on to trace the epoch-making developments that the nation’s democracy has endured beginning with its colonial past and continuing through to the grant of independence and following on with the attainment of republican status, the failed experiment of “co-operative socialism”, the return of the People’s Progressive Party to office in 1992, the trauma of the 1997 and 2001 elections, and resulting attempts at inclusivity, and finally, the adjustment to the vagaries and complexities of a minority government scenario.”
QUOTE: “ In all these various periods of change, brave, conscientious, and patriotic men and women have shouldered the responsibility of nation-building and ensuring social cohesion – all within a parliamentary framework. In all these various periods of change, brave, conscientious, and patriotic men and women have shouldered the responsibility of nation-building and ensuring social cohesion – all within a parliamentary framework.”
