By Mark DaCosta- The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government has claimed to have made some efforts to develop Guyana’s food security. This was highlighted in an announcement by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha in October 2023. However, in the face of a rapidly changing global geopolitical climate, where conflicts and tensions impact food security worldwide, it becomes imperative to assess and reinforce measures to safeguard our food stability.

Reputable sources underscore the urgency of addressing these issues. According to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), “Geopolitical tensions and conflicts are increasingly affecting global food security by disrupting the crucial maritime transport routes that facilitate the movement of food supplies.”

It is essential to recognise that the world is undergoing significant shifts that directly threaten the availability and accessibility of food resources. Geopolitical events have a domino effect on global food supplies, affecting even nations geographically distant from the epicentres of conflict. Nations such as Guyana.

One glaring example of such shifts is the war between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine, a major grain producer, plays a crucial role in the global supply of food. The conflict is disrupting agricultural production in Ukraine, impacting the global availability of grains. The naval blockade of Ukrainian ports by Russia compounds the issue, hindering the free flow of grain exports even as the war persists.

Maritime transport is a lifeline for food distribution, and conflicts around the world are disrupting this vital system. The Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea, directly linked to the Hamas-Israeli conflict, have led to heightened security concerns in the region. As ships avoid the Red Sea, a key maritime route, the transportation of food is impeded, posing a threat to global food security.

Political tensions between mainland China and Taiwan further contribute to maritime disruptions. Ships avoiding the South China Sea due to these tensions create bottlenecks in the transportation of goods, including food supplies. The repercussions of these actions reverberate globally, impacting the availability and prices of essential commodities.

In the midst of these geopolitical challenges, Guyana’s PPP government must intensify its efforts to fortify the nation’s food security. The government must adopt a proactive approach. This approach  should be complemented by swift and comprehensive measures to counter the potential fallout from global conflicts.

Furthermore, an article in The Guardian stresses the interconnectedness of global conflicts and food security, quoting an expert from the World Food Programme (WFP): “In an era of heightened geopolitical tensions, the threat to food security is a reality we cannot ignore. Governments must be vigilant and proactive in ensuring the resilience of their food systems.”

As Guyana navigates through the complex landscape of changing global geopolitics, the PPP government must act decisively to secure the nation’s food future. Acknowledging the potential risks posed by conflicts worldwide, it is incumbent upon the government to reinforce and expedite measures that will safeguard Guyana’s food security in the face of an ever-evolving geopolitical arena
