By Ubraj Narine- During a recent press conference, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo made comments about the University of Guyana that can only be described as idiotic.
It is important to note that the PPP government has never supported the University of Guyana since 1992, yet they have consistently neglected the university in terms of financial support. Despite the immense potential and talent that exists within the university, the government has failed to provide adequate resources to improve its infrastructure, faculty, and research facilities.
Rather than allocating significant sums of money toward programs like the recently introduced Goal program, the same money can be redirected to the university of Guyana to promote sustainable development and economic growth.
The PPP government should prioritise investing in the University of Guyana as it would not only benefit the institution but also contribute to the overall advancement of education in the country.
Furthermore, it is baffling that the PPP government continues to support the sugar industry, which has been a drain on the economy for decades. Billions of taxpayers’ dollars have been spent on an industry that consistently failed to make a profit.
This money could be put to much better use if it were allocated to improving the University of Guyana, thereby creating a more advance and conducive learning environment for students and enhancing the country’s human capital.
In this context, it is crucial to acknowledge the commendable efforts of Vice Chancellor Paloma Mohamed. Despite limited resources, she has done an excellent job managing the university and providing quality education to students. Her dedication and innovation in the face of adversity should be recognized and supported by the government.
It is disappointing to see Vice President Jagdeo making uninformed and senseless remarks about the university. Rather than talking rubbish, he should focus on implementing policies that promote free university education and ensure that all Guyanese have equal access to quality higher education. Education is the cornerstone of development, and it is essential that the government recognises and prioritises this for the betterment of the country.
In conclusion, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s Ignorant comments about the University of Guyana demonstrates a lack of understanding of the government’s role to invest in education sector. The PPP government should redirect its resources from failing industries towards supporting the university and providing free education for all. The excellent work of Vice Chancellor Paloma Mohamed deserves recognition and support. It is time for the government to stop talking and start implementing policies that will truly benefit the future of Guyana.
