The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD) is deeply concerned about the deteriorating state of freedom of expression in our beloved country under the governance of Bharrat Jagdeo / Irfaan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government. So said the institute in a statement referring to a recent press conference at Freedom House hosted by the party’s general secretary and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo.

Jagdeo at that press conference has threatened to go after social media influencers who criticise them, warning :- “So, I hope that the social media influencers who are operating under the guise that they are not in our jurisdiction and they feel safe abroad, safe from the reach of our law, that they are taking note too and I hope that anyone that the malign, sue them now and hire somebody abroad to serve them notice or the summon and make sure they video it like they did Rickford Burke and then proceed in Court.”

IFAAD not only condemns the warning and noted has exposed a worrying trend of silencing dissenting voices and suppressing the fundamental right of citizens to freely express their opinions, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, stifling public discourse and endangering democratic principles that our nation holds dear. “It is with great regret that we declare that under their rule, citizens are unable to voice their concerns, criticism, or disagreements with the government without facing severe consequences.”

The suppression of freedom of expression has far-reaching implications on our society, the institute notes, stating that a nation that prides itself on upholding democratic values, it is disheartening to witness the unwarranted constraints placed on the right to freely express oneself. “The voice of the people is the cornerstone of a thriving democracy, and its stifling undermines the foundations that our nation was built upon.”

Making known its position on the matter, IFAAD states the organisation stands united with the brave individuals who continue to challenge the oppressive environment under the PPP Government and pledges its unwavering commitment to defending and supporting those who dare to exercise their right to speak up, demanding a fair and inclusive society.

Appealing to good sense IFAAD has implored upon the Bharrat Jagdeo / Irfaan Ali and the PPP Government to reconsider their approach towards dissent and critique, advising it is crucial for a government to encourage diverse perspectives and constructive dialogue, as this fosters transparency, accountability, and progress. “By curbing citizens’ ability to express their thoughts, their right to hold the government accountable is severely undermined, potentially leading to an erosion of democratic practices within our country.”

The Institute for Action Against Discrimination also wants to see the involvement of the international community, human rights organisations, and responsible global citizens playing a role in demanding swift and meaningful change to the current situation in our country. “We urge them to closely monitor the situation and advocate for the restoration of freedom of expression, without which a society cannot function freely and equitably.”
