The New York Tri-State Chapter of the Bishops’ High School (BHS) Alumni Association is holding its third  Student Conference at its alma mater in Georgetown, Guyana on October 23- 27, 2023.

The four-day conference, which will be held at the school’s campus on Carmichael Street, is titled “An  Eye on the Future – What’s Next?” The event aims to provide students with a unique opportunity to be  exposed to a variety of perspectives on career choices, higher education, and vocational opportunities.

With each iteration of the conference, we have expanded both in scope and reach. President of the  Alumni Chapter, Philip Peroune, notes that this year the group has targeted 10th – 13th graders. “This  addition of the 10th graders recognizes the need for earlier discussions about life after high school, as  some students will leave BHS after Grade 11. We wanted to give students a longer runway with which to  make meaningful decisions about their future.”

The conference will host for the first time a virtual component, which will allow for an even wider  variety of presenters – including those who cannot travel to Georgetown. The virtual sessions will take  advantage of the media room recently donated by the New York Tri-State Chapter. As in the 2019  conference, students can participate in a Career Fair and four Sports Clinics.

“Organizations attending the Career Fair will showcase their businesses, engage with students, and  show the students what career opportunities might be available to them as they leave high school. We also want the students to avail themselves of the Sports Clinics – as we believe that extracurricular  activities provide valuable lessons in collaboration and leadership,” Chapter President Peroune said.

On the last day of the conference, students will take part in a teambuilding event, that will highlight  communication and other critical soft skills.

According to Headmistress, Ms. Shandrina Welcome-Lee, “This Student Conference promises to provide  for our students much needed guidance, knowledge and opportunities to navigate the world of work  and further studies.”

The conference will begin on Tuesday, 24th October with a Welcome Assembly and Student Registration.  The highlights of Day 1 will be the Virtual sessions in the morning and the Career Fair in the afternoon.  General sessions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, with concurrent presentations and  workshops daily featuring over 60 presenters representing a myriad of innovative careers and change making opportunities that include Entrepreneurship, Law, IT, Medicine, Engineering, the Arts, Veterinary  Medicine, Leadership, Employment and Life Skills.

“This year we have emphasized emerging career opportunities and life skills. We hope that the  Conference will open the students’ eyes to the broad spectrum of opportunities available to them,” said  Co-Chair of the Conference Planning Committee, Jo-Ann Davis-Valz. “I am so excited that we have so  many presenters based in Guyana, in addition to those traveling home from the diaspora”, said Co-Chair  of the Conference Planning Committee, Janis Davis-Street. The sisters both expressed their gratitude for  the conference planning team, who have dedicated months to preparing for the conference, and to the  Headmistress, Ms. Shandrina Welcome-Lee, who has been a tireless supporter.
