The Rotary Club of Garden City, in alignment with District 7030’s initiative on Childhood Obesity Prevention, joined hands with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to conduct a transformative 6-day workshop. This workshop was specially designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of selected participants from three homes in Georgetown, encompassing both kitchen and administrative staff.

The core objective of this comprehensive programme was to empower the participants with the essential expertise and training required to deliver nutritious and healthy meals in safe, hygienic, and aesthetically pleasing institutional settings. These spaces were created to adhere to the highest standards of quality.

Upon returning to their respective work environments, the participants will be expected to: adhere to workplace procedures focusing on health, safety, and security; maintain impeccable personal presentation standards; efficiently prepare shopping lists, practice proper storage and pre-preparation techniques, and proactively identify and mitigate hygiene risks; skillfully plan menus employing the multi-mix principle, leveraging locally available ingredients; and prepare and present appetizing, nutritious meals within institutional settings.

The intensive 6-day workshop was led by Mrs. Penelope Harris, the former principal of the Carnegie School of Home Economics. Hon. Dr Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Human Services and Social Security was present at the closing ceremony where certificates of participation were distributed to delegates from the different residential facilities.

The Rotary Club of Garden City expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Minister Persaud for providing this invaluable opportunity to collaborate with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. This collaboration stands as a collective effort to combat the rising challenge of Childhood Obesity within the Caribbean region.
