In a swift and robust response, President Rickford Burke of the Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) addressed the allegations directed towards him by Guyana’s Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, during a recent press conference. Burke, not one to shy away from the accusations, mounted a staunch defense of his organization while methodically countering the claims made against him.
Delving into the matter, Burke queried the Vice President’s evident preoccupation with his activities, posing a rhetorical question, “Why are you so interested?” Coupled with a sense of irony, Burke noted Jagdeo’s purported belief in his status as a “constitutional law scholar with expertise in US law.” Taking exception to the accusations, Burke challenged the notion that CGID operates as a foreign agent, contending that such claims might apply more fittingly to some of Jagdeo’s associates in Queens.
Diving deeper, Burke questioned Jagdeo’s stance on the rights and voices of black individuals in the United States, insinuating that the Vice President’s assertions undermine their constitutional rights. He leveled criticism against what he described as Jagdeo’s potentially divisive and stereotypical views towards African Guyanese and African Americans. Firmly dismissing the allegations hurled at CGID, Burke firmly asserted the organization’s adherence to transparent fundraising practices while labeling Jagdeo’s statements as unsubstantiated.
Strengthening his point, Burke spoke of ongoing investigations involving certain so-called elites in Guyana, including Jagdeo, hinting at potential legal ramifications of Jagdeo’s attempt to influence and subvert the rights of citizens of the United States. He expressed CGID’s intent to advocate for justice and accountability, emphasizing a steadfast commitment to espousing truth to those in power.
Burke also underscored his intention to address the allegations via legal channels, remarking, “We will play all of Jagdeo’s comments in Congress.” Furthermore, he indicated CGID’s pursuit of sanctions against Jagdeo, citing his alleged involvement in activities of a criminal nature.
Burke also expressed his welcome for Jagdeo’s ongoing attention to him, sharing that Jagdeo’s obsession with him amplifies awareness about the values he champions and the causes CGID ardently supports, which essentially makes him more popular. Unwavering in his stance, Burke articulated CGID’s resolute commitment to its mission, promising to stand unyielding against attempts to delegitimize their advocacy for justice and equality.
