In a health conscious world, individuals who pursue a deep understanding of health sciences play a pivotal role in advancing human wellness. These dedicated enthusiasts and professionals possess a unique blend of curiosity, determination, and empathy, propelling them to unravel the intricacies of the human body and mind. Amongst them, there are those whose passion for health sciences burns brighter than most, leading them to make extraordinary contributions to the field and inspiring others along the way.

Meet 28-year-old Le Shana Valentine, a dynamic force in the realm of health sciences whose journey is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Valentine hails from the Cinderella county (Essequibo, Region 2) and is the eldest of 6 siblings. She is currently employed as an X-ray technician and is an avid lover of nature and finds the computer science and photography fields interesting. She also enjoys writing poems and short stories and dancing.

Valentine came from a family of health science professionals. Her passion for health sciences was ignited after a book which fell from her mom’s book shelf opened and she saw a picture of babies with different diseases and that piqued her curiosity.

“I realised that midwifery was the closest I can get to seeing babies delivered. But X-ray took over because it combined two of my favourite fields: Computer Science and photography,” she said.

As Valentine progressed through her education, her passion for health sciences evolved into a profound commitment to making a positive impact on people’s lives. In 2017, she enrolled in the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) X-Ray Technician Program offered by the Health sciences department. This program allowed her to immerse herself in a curriculum that delved into the depths of anatomy & physiology, nutrition, physics, public health and radiology. However, it was her hands-on experiences that aided in igniting her enthusiasm and allowed her to contribute meaningfully.

Further she added: “Because I enjoy assisting in solving my patients’ problems, I went and further my studies. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Dental Surgeon (BDS)”.

Valentine’s biggest challenge while studying is working and staying motivated and this can become exhausting. She also faced financial struggles however close friends and relatives stepped in.

In the future, she aims to become a Dental Radiologist, combining her love for dentistry and radiology. She also wishes to further her studies in both Computer Science and photography and specialising in another Dentistry career.

Le Shana’s passion for health sciences is not confined to academic pursuits alone. She recognized the importance of disseminating accurate health information to the public in an accessible manner, harnessing her love for communication.

Her journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring health sciences enthusiasts. Her story underscores the significance of embracing one’s passion wholeheartedly, weathering challenges with resilience, and channelling knowledge towards meaningful impact. As our

world continues to grapple with health challenges old and new, individuals like Le Shana remind us that the pursuit of knowledge, guided by passion and empathy, has the power to transform lives.
