After an on-site analysis and drone inspection, preliminary investigation showed the cause of the flash flood and mudslide in Xi’an, Shaanxi province was the collapse of an upstream mountain, which led to a blockage in the channel. Subsequent accumulated floodwaters broke through the blockage, local news outlets reported on Monday.

The flash flood and mudslide occurred on Friday in Weiziping village in Xi’an’s Chang’an district, which killed 21 people and left six others missing.
