Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, Ms. Geeta Chandan-Edmond, in a statement, has expressed concern with the dangerous crime situation that has engulfed the society. She feels the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Robeson Benn and the Guyana Police Force have no clue how to tackle the situation and are in effect bringing the justice system on its knees.
The statement follows:
STATEMENT ON THE CRIME SITUATION
From the outset, I wish to lament the dangerous crime situation which presently engulfs the society.
There is nothing being done at the policy level that can induce confidence among the people.
To date, the Guyana Police Force remains highly politicized, there is no crime plan, the Ministry of Home Affairs has no clue and criminal justice system is on its knees.
In that sordid context, oil and gas investors have resorted to issuing internal security memos that advise their employees on the dangerous security situation. Coupled with this, the United States had no choice but to issue a general advisory to US citizens on the crime situation in Guyana.
We cannot boast of any prosperity or development if it is all premised on the lack of security.
I use this opportunity to, once again, call on the Government to arrest the crime situation and return Guyana to its pre-2020 calm and peace.
The people of Guyana must be safe and secure in their homes, communities, villages and towns and it is a responsibility of the state to formulate and articulate clear and consistent policies to ensure citizen security.
