The A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Member of Parliament (MP), Ms. Annette Ferguson, has filed two motions to the National Assembly to address the prices government charge for the disbursement of house lots, and the other, to address domestic violence.

On the motion of the house lots, Ferguson wants the National Assembly to establish a Special Select Committee to “address the scourge of domestic violence in Guyana.” Acknowledging Guyana’s Domestic Violence Act, the APNU+AFC’s tabled Motion in the National Assembly in August 2013 and sought for a Special Select Committee to address “Interpersonal Violence” and United Nations’ data  that shows one in every two women between ages 15-60 are victims of domestic violence, the MP in her motion resolved:

“That the National Assembly appoints a Special Select Committee of the National Assembly headed by the Minister responsible for the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, to review the present situation, approaches of perpetrators, and the factors leading to these vicious acts of Domestic Violence and make recommendations.”

The motion was filed 31st May, 2023 and is on the Order Paper of 21st June, 2023.

On the house lot issue, the MP approached the National Assembly to establish a Special Select Committee to Review Charges for House Lots for Guyanese. Ferguson is contending the price to acquire a house lot places it out of the reach of ordinary people. Ferguson holds the view that oil-rich Guyana can afford to make housing “easily accessible for Guyanese who are earning salaries below $200,000.00.” To this end the MP desires of the National Assembly to approve the appointment of: –

“…a Special Select Committee of the National Assembly headed by the Minister responsible for the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, to review the present situation, approaches of perpetrators, and the factors leading to these vicious acts of Domestic Violence and make recommendations.”

and

“That the Special Select Committee, on completion of its work, submits to the National Assembly a detailed report with its recommendations and asks that the House approves of the Ministry of Housing and Water to incorporate them into its Policy.”

The motion was filed 31st May, 2023 and is on the Order Paper of 21st June, 2023.
