Georgetown, Guyana – The ongoing construction project on Cemetery Road, between Princess and Middle Road, has sparked concerns among taxpayers and Opposition MP Hon. Annette Ferguson. The $475 million project, which according to MP Ferguson, was awarded to Avinash Construction and Metal Works Company, and is slated for completion by July 2023, but Ferguson’s assessment reveals that it is not even 40% finished.
Ferguson, in her role as a Member of Parliament, has raised the issue to shed light on the situation and ensure accountability for taxpayers’ funds invested in the project. She expressed her interest in works being done across the country as she was the former Junior Public Infrastructure Minister and she emphasized the need to monitor the progress of projects funded by taxpayers.
One of the major concerns highlighted by Ferguson is the apparent lack of capacity on the contractor’s end. Observations at the construction site revealed a shortage of workers, with fewer than 20 workmen present. This raises questions about the contractor’s ability to meet project deadlines and deliver quality workmanship.
Adding to the concerns, Ferguson noted that the same contractor is also involved in another significant project on Schoonard Road, West Bank Demerara. During a recent visit to the area, she observed subpar work being done, raising doubts about the contractor’s attention to detail and commitment to delivering satisfactory results.
As part of her efforts to ensure transparency, Ferguson has tabled several questions regarding the Cemetery Road project to Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill, the Minister of Public Works. She expects detailed answers to be provided, which she intends to make public. However, it should be noted that the last sitting of the National Assembly occurred on May 10, 2023, nearly a month and a half ago.
Ferguson, acknowledging the inconvenience and risks faced by daily road users along that corridor, has pledged to closely monitor the progress of the project. She is determined to ensure that taxpayers receive value for their money and that the construction meets the necessary standards.
