In a powerful Facebook Live address, Guyana’s MP Dawn Williams passionately spoke out against the mistreatment of indigenous children in the country. On Father’s Day, Williams chose to shed light on the deeply concerning online revelations of sexual assault against an indigenous child by a sitting minister of the Guyana government. She called for unity and collective action to defend the rights of indigenous girls, highlighting the urgent need for justice and protection.

The MP stated that, “I have been very quiet. I have been listening. I have been reading to all the statements that were made by my fellow parliamentarians, especially the women. I also read the statement made by the Leader of the Opposition and by MP Ms. Geeta Edmonds and by MP Amanda walton-Desir, and they all have made very good points. They have made it clear that they condemn the alleged gruesome act, and I want to join them today. I want to stand with them in solidarity to condemn this act that was alleged meted out to our young Indigenous girl.”

Defending the Rights of Indigenous Girls
As a representative of Guyana’s indigenous people, Williams expressed concern over the lack of recognition and support given to these communities, particularly in the context of protecting the rights of indigenous girls. The MP called on youth organizations, regardless of their political affiliations, to unite in condemning the alleged act committed against the indigenous girl. She implored women’s organizations, non-governmental organizations, the international community, and the diplomatic corps to join forces in standing against this grave injustice. Williams emphasized the power of social media in giving a voice to victims and urged all concerned parties to push for an impartial investigation, potentially involving independent persons, to ensure accountability.

Protecting Vulnerable Children
The MP drew attention to the vulnerability faced by indigenous children in Guyana, emphasizing the need for parental guidance and support during the transitional teenage years. Williams expressed deep concern over the neglect and discrimination faced by indigenous communities, citing examples such as inadequate educational facilities and unequal access to services. She highlighted the tragic incidents of fire-related deaths among indigenous children and called for action, demanding justice, and equal opportunities for all Guyanese youths.

MP Dawn Williams’s Facebook Live address has brought attention to the pressing issue of protecting indigenous children in Guyana. Her impassioned plea for unity, accountability, and justice serves as a call to action for citizens, organizations, and international bodies to stand together against any form of mistreatment or discrimination. The MP stated that it is crucial for all stakeholders to work collaboratively in ensuring the rights and well-being of indigenous children and all children, are safeguarded, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
