In a concerning turn of events, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has failed to deliver on its promise to release the results of the Local Government Elections (LGE) held last night. This delay is particularly troubling, given Guyana’s history of electoral challenges and the six-month delay in the release of the 2020 election results.

The timely release of election results plays a crucial role in upholding the credibility of the electoral process. However, despite the availability of unofficial posted results and their circulation online, GECOM has remained silent, causing unease among citizens and media outlets. Several news organizations have projected and declared victories for various individuals and parties based on the available statement of polls, further adding to the confusion surrounding the delayed official announcement.

GECOM’s Chairman, Claudette Singh, whose involvement was marred by controversy during the 2020 elections, along with the newly appointed CEO and Deputy CEO, both equally controversial figures, have fallen short in their responsibilities regarding the 2023 LGE. Concerns are growing that this delay may set an ominous precedent for the upcoming 2025 election, casting doubt on the commission’s ability to conduct future elections efficiently and transparently.

The urgency to commence the release of the election results cannot be overstated. The longer the delay persists, the more speculation and rumors will circulate. Already, there are murmurs of alleged collusion between the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and GECOM officials, potentially aimed at manipulating the LGE’s outcome. Such developments are deeply unsettling for Guyana’s fragile democracy, which has already suffered severe damage due to past electoral controversies.

The responsibility lies squarely with GECOM to address the concerns and restore confidence in the electoral process. Transparency and accountability must be upheld to safeguard the democratic values that Guyana cherishes. The citizens of Guyana, as well as the international community, are closely watching these events unfold, underscoring the need for GECOM to take immediate action.

As Guyana awaits the release of the LGE results, it is imperative that GECOM breaks its silence and provides a clear timeline for announcing the official outcomes. The future of democracy in Guyana hinges on the timely release of results and the restoration of faith in the electoral system.
