As Guyana gears up for the upcoming local government elections, the words of social activist Lurlene Nestor, a passionate Guyanese returning from the diaspora to cast her vote, echo the urgency for every citizen to exercise their right to vote. Nestor emphasizes the need for voters to choose local officials who genuinely respect and provide equal access to opportunities for all citizens of Guyana.

With heartfelt conviction, Nestor encourages every eligible voter to recognize the true value of their vote, stating, “Voting is important. No, no. Voting is very important. Cast your ballot and invest in yourself.” She underscores the sacrifices made by countless individuals who fought for the right to vote, urging Guyanese not to take this privilege for granted.

Nestor passionately emphasizes that the development and progress of communities across Guyana depend on citizens’ active participation in the electoral process. “Your communities are important. The development in your communities is important,” she asserts. By voting for candidates who genuinely have the people’s best interests at heart, citizens can shape a brighter future for their regions and the nation as a whole.

Furthermore, Nestor raises concerns about the transparent distribution of funds and resources during election campaigns. While acknowledging the significance of financial support for families, she firmly reminds voters, “That $40,000 is your money. Nobody can pay you to vote for them. It is your money.” She urges voters to reject any attempts to manipulate them through the distribution of funds, emphasizing the importance of personal integrity and respect.

As Nestor passionately calls for accountability and transparency in the electoral process, she also poses important questions to opposition parties, challenging them to actively engage with the electorate and provide genuine representation. “Where are all these people who want to be leaders? They have to be here in and out of season,” she demands.

According to Nestor, she paid her own way to return to Guyana to vote because the upcoming local government elections in Guyana hold tremendous significance for the nation’s future. Nestor’s powerful message serves as a reminder of the importance of voting for candidates who genuinely respect and support the people they serve. By participating in the electoral process, citizens can shape communities that offer equal opportunities for all, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs addressed.
